Job Search in September: Are You Ready?

How is your job search going?
I hope you managed to take a short break during the summer and relax. As September progresses, you should step on the gas and resume your job search activities if you want to land the role until the end of the year.
Use a strong September hiring outlook and focus on your job search - what does your resume look like? Are you prepared for interviews? Do recruiters contact you on LinkedIn?
I know, I know... there are so many challenges out there: intense competition, layoffs, unfavourable economic developments… But, instead of thinking only about difficulties, think about how you can improve and change things that you control. For example, can YOU help someone? Or can you shift your focus from "I can't because..." to “I can, despite of…”
?
Things it would be wise to do right now
?
? Ask colleagues who found a new job recently how they did it, who their recruiters were, and if there are any job openings at their new company.
?
? Connect with the recruiters/headhunters in your industry and share what type of role, compensation, and corporate title you seek. Reach out to people in your network to find any job leads.
?
? Make a list of your target companies and research what positions they are taking—remote, hybrid, or in-office. Follow and connect with their active LinkedIn employees.
?
? If you’ve neglected your resume and LinkedIn profile , start updating them. Brush up your interviewing skills. What do you know about the hiring process in general? Do you know the current job market? Are you familiar with job search practices that work?
?
A big reason why you should make the best of September (and October)
?
Another benefit of autumn hiring is the urge for hiring managers to use all resources - quarterly and annual budget cycles need to be used up. With only a few months until the end of the year, many hiring managers will want to use their budget rather than lose it (positions still open are redundant and useless, so they face a decision to fill positions or lose them entirely).
?
...but, there are things you should be aware of
?
?? If you are a mid or high-level professional, you usually get a hefty bonus around December-January. Find out if the company will make good on the money you’ll be leaving behind.
?
?? Thoroughly check out the company that you’re interviewing with. As we are going through fast-changing and volatile times, it is wise to find out if the employer has planned layoffs, how they dealt with prior downsizing, and if they are in a stable financial situation or facing problems. If you know someone at the company, discreetly ask them if they can fill you in on any potential issues.
?
The most challenging part of job hunting is staying motivated and persevering
?
I know many people who have been on the market for more than 6 months right now. If you are one of them, use all the help you can find. Ask for advice and guidance. Something like editing a resume can be daunting, especially now that we have so many tools at our disposal—how do we use them efficiently? You don’t have to know all the answers; rely on people that can help you.
