Job Search in LinkedIn #9 Tips

LinkedIn is the world's largest professional network on the internet which can be used to find jobs, internships, connect with people and enhance your professional network in the industry and you can showcase your achievements, share your experience and many more.

Even though its one of the most popular social media platform, many people still have no idea how to use LinkedIn and what are the advantages being on it.

I have listed out few tips for effective job search in LinkedIn:

1.    LinkedIn is all about Networking:

Networking is the most effective way to get a job in all industries and LinkedIn is the best platform to connect with recruiters. We can search and find people with Designation, Company, Location, etc.

For Example, we can search: “HR Manager GE Healthcare”, “Sales Manager Philips Healthcare”, “Service Manager Siemens Healthineers”, “R&D Engineer Medtronic”, etc.

2.    Having a Strong LinkedIn Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is similar to your resume, so try to showcase it well and it may bring recruiters to you. Up to 96% of recruiters are using LinkedIn to source their talent, so its equal opportunity for job seekers and recruiters. So its like finding a match in matrimony website ??. Make sure your profile is attractive!

3.    Build your Professional Network (Quantity Vs Quality Approach)

Its good having a decent number of connections in LinkedIn, so it will give you good visibility and people will accept your LinkedIn request without much hesitation. Try to include a note as well while sending initial connection requests.

Once you are having a good number of connections, focus on building a quality network. Connect with more people from your industry, your organisation, People from your competitor companies, college alumni, etc.

4.    Being “Available Vs Active”

LinkedIn can be a powerful job search tool if actively utilized, Having a profile alone wouldn’t make it effective, Being active is most important.

We can Like, Comment or share and engage with people even before sending a connection request, so try to follow and engage with people those who are in your target list. If your profile is familiar, the chance for accepting the request would be high.

Once we are connected, we are getting an opportunity to message them and also we may get their contact details from their Profile - Contact info.

5.    Build a relationship

Recruiters hire people they know, trust, and like. So, it’s better to avoid directly ask someone to refer you into their company/ consider you for the vacancy. We have the opportunity to interact by messaging or by commenting to their posts/ articles.

6.    Approach the right person

If there is a vacancy posted in Linkedin/ other platforms, Try contacting the decision makers for the particular job role, For example: Service Engineer – Service Manager/ Team Leaders, Sales Executive – Sales Manager/ Team Leader/ HR Manager, etc. It will help you to understand the possibilities and current status of the vacancy. They may ask you to share your resume and you can follow up as well directly instead of sending resume to a unknown mail id/ uploading to a job portal. The same method can be used to identify the possible interviewers once you are shortlisted.

7.    Seek help from your Alumni

If you can find a college alumni in an organization where you are looking for a job, don’t hesitate to ask their guidance. Most of the companies fill their vacancies by referrals, if someone can refer you for the position, that’s most recommended. So, always maintain a good rapport with your alumni.

8.    Follow company pages and hiring managers

You can find hiring managers and company pages updating vacancies, so closely monitor their updates and apply for suitable vacancies.

9.    Create Job Alerts

LinkedIn has the feature to create Job alerts and that you can customise based on your priority. You can create by Job title, skill, company and location. You will get notified on daily/ weekly basis in your email and notification.
