Job Search During the Holiday Season

Job Search During the Holiday Season

If you are in transition between jobs, the holiday season can push anxiety and worry into overdrive. There is a misconception that businesses, and hiring specifically, slows down around the holidays, and perhaps the job search should wait.

Untrue. In my career, I have written new business and closed deals on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. If there is urgency for a hire, the holidays are only a date on a calendar. In fact, often the holidays kick hiring urgency into high gear, as there is a realization that budgeted headcount approvals may be lost if not filled.

For those seeking a new opportunity, the holidays are daunting for many reasons. As you navigate towards your next role, keep focus on what you can control. Reviewing and responding to appropriate job postings is only one of many steps. The holidays create an excellent environment to warm and grow your network, as well as tap into the roles that are not advertised, the "hidden job market".

  1. Start with a plan. You are now the product and the service. Who is your customer? What companies interest you and why? What technologies? You should have a working document that outlines and tracks your targets. What individuals around your skillset would understand your value best? Who would hire you? Who are the peers on that team? Your plan should track target companies and individuals on when you approach them and with what message. This intention will directly impact the quality of your messaging, increasing your rate of response. Reach out via email and/or phone, and track your activity for follow up.
  2. Build a professional online presence, it is MORE important than a resume. LinkedIn is the largest professional party, and if you only have one media platform, I recommend having a strong LinkedIn profile. Beyond a professional picture, your profile should include all that your resume covers. Ensure you use keywords that are searchable, meaning "Sales and Marketing Leader" may be better than "Vice President". The resume should be an easier step, and those in transition can look for free templates online like freesumes or Google Docs
  3. Foster your network. Reaching out to those you know warmly, and those you do not know appropriately, is the key to tapping the hidden job market. Connecting through LinkedIn is a critical step. The more people with whom you are connected, the more likely you are to be "found" in a search. Connecting to those you don't yet know requires a valuable message, for example, “I am following your company with interest based on your latest market approval in heart valves. In my last two companies, I led product development in that space. I welcome a connection.” LinkedIn allows you to "follow" companies, which gives you insight into press releases and other interesting news you can reference in a connection request. Another avenue is to join more "Groups", found under the "Interests" tab at the bottom of your profile page. Being in a shared group makes you a closer connection to all members.
  4. Keep your network warm. After connecting via LinkedIn, you have access to a direct email address. You can reach out with a well-crafted email of why you are interested in their company, and what value you can offer. Do not get too specific on titles or geography or anything that puts parameters on what you will consider, you don’t want to give reason for the person hearing or reading the message to rule you out.
  5. Follow up with value. Like any consummate salesperson, the actual sale doesn’t typically happen until you have called on the customer at least three times. Get news alerts on happenings at their company and reach out. “I see you received 510k approval, congratulations! I continue to have great interest in the work being done at ABC company.”
  6. Look for networking opportunities, virtual or live.  This year has proven effectiveness in virtual conferences and business meet ups. Look for these interest groups. Around the holidays specifically, look for social events that give you the opportunity to meet new people in new circles. Collect lists of attendees and reach out to each with intention and value.
  7. Research and follow trends.  The holidays are typically a time where many articles are published with speculation about growth into the next year. Growth market segments require talent, and that equates to hiring. Ensure you are targeting companies and technologies that are expected to be robust market opportunities.
  8. Manage your head and your heart. You are unemployed, and there is immense pressure to find a new position. However, there is a law of diminishing returns when it comes to sitting in front of a computer and reaching out to new individuals and companies. After 4-5 hours a day, step away and take the time and do something positive for yourself. Whether exercise, spirituality, volunteering, spending time with family or others in need, use the time to build yourself up. Focus on positive steps where you have control over outcomes and receive gratification. My Grandmother taught me, "There is always something to be thankful for", and in my most difficult personal challenges, I try and remember this truth. Staying healthy, mentally and positively, is a critical component of getting you back into the workforce.

As your drive your career over a lifetime, chances are you will find yourself in a job search at some point.  The perception that things slow down around the holidays does not have to slow down your job search. In fact, the holiday season offers unique opportunities for networking and tapping into the hidden job market. If you have a well thought out plan and execute against it on a daily basis, you will gain back control and confidence needed that are often lost in this difficult time. Stay focused, stay positive, and keep driving.

Great, timely advice for the holiday season! I especially like the tip, “Build a professional online presence, it is MORE important than a resume”. I often heard in university that it is important to have a LinkedIn account, but the WHY was a bit unclear.
