Job Scam Avoidance

The existence of job scams has existed and it is very common around the world. There are various sources that job scams can be detected from; either through the internet or face to face job offers. However, as more and more job seekers use the internet to look for work, job scams have shifted online and increased in frequency. In 2020 it was reported that 16,012 people fell as a prey to the job scams with losses reaching more than $59 million, according to the FBIS; which is an online crime complaint center

In this blog we will discuss the common signs of job scams and methods of avoiding job scams:

1- Insufficient Job Description

We all have encountered job descriptions that seem suspicious and that is either because its wording is too formal to point that it won’t make any sense or it’s written with negligence and numerous grammatical mistakes.?

Job posts should be simple and easy to understand. Candidates should be able to determine whether they meet the requirements for your available position from your job description's level of detail. It should include type of tasks, requirements, the needed qualifications, and how it links to the organization's mission and objectives.

2- Asking for certain Amount of Money

Working from your comfort zone is always something appealing for most of the job seekers. Job scammers have taken advantage of that especially after Covid-19 that they post work from home jobs with a very attractive salary but they ask the candidates to send them an amount of money first and then they could get hired; don’t fall for that. Professional and real jobs don’t require the candidates that are willing to apply for any amount of money.?

3- Asking for Detailed Personal Information

Typical job application questions contain your name, address, phone number, and past working experience, but they shouldn't go much more than that. Think twice before giving out any detailed personal information before being interviewed and receiving a written offer like your social security number, passport number, driver's license number, permission for a background check, credit check, or direct deposit.? A background check or social security number are never requested during the interview stage by a reputable organization. That occurs following your hiring process.?

4- Lack of Verified Information?

You may think you've found your dream job, but after a closer look, you can't find any information about the company. If their phone number, address, website, or employees cannot be authenticated, it is absolutely a scam. Real businesses today have some degree of online presence and social media involvement.
