Free English lesson: Job satisfaction.

Job satisfaction? Isn’t that like pink unicorns ( = jednoro?ce)? Or like work-life balance? Everyone has heard of it, but no-one has seen it?

Well, I hope not! I definitely AM satisfied with my job. Although I’m not sure you could call it a job. I guess running your own business (= prowadzenie w?asnej firmy) isn’t really a job…

Anyway, first things first ( = po kolei)! What are the components of job satisfaction?

This probably depends on the person. Number one will probably always be remuneration ( = wynagrodzenie). If you aren’t paid well, then you just don’t feel like ( = mie? ochot? na) making the effort every day. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys ( = jaka p?aca, taka praca), right? ;) And earning peanuts – that’s an idiom – it means you earn very little :).

I won’t be coy (= wstydliwa) here :). The money certainly is crucial ( = kluczowe) for me, in my business. In the past, I used to work for language schools. But I could never get my head round ( = nigdy nie pojmowa?am) the numbers: how come a school charges ( = ka?e sobie p?aci?) 100 z? for a class, and the teacher only gets 40 z? of that? That’s daylight robbery ( = rozbój w bia?y dzień)! So, that was one of the reasons I was dissatisfied with ( = niezadowolona z) my work for language schools, and started my own business ( = za?o?y?am w?asn? firm?).

The second factor ( = czynnik) involved in job satisfaction are promotion prospects ( = szanse na awans). While most people are content with ( = zadowoleni z) doing the same job for life, most of us want to climb the career ladder ( = wspina? si? po drabinie kariery), and getting stuck in a rut ( = utykanie w koleinie = praca bez szans na awans) is a no-no ( = sytuacja niedopuszczalna). That’s what you call a dead-end job ( = praca bez szans na awans), by the way!

For me, that involved scaling ( = skalowanie) my business, and the ability to do different things. Instead of just teaching classes, with the occasional variation between one-on-one classes and group classes, I can now offer specialized trainings, employee audits, and online courses – pdf, video and audio courses. Variety is the spice of life ( = ró?norodno?? nadaje ?yciu smak)!

And the third component of job satisfaction are our colleagues, or co-workers ( = wspó?pracownicy). Who you work with, and the atmosphere in the workplace, has a profound impact on ( = ogromny wp?yw na) your happiness and job satisfaction. If you hate the guts of ( = nienawidzisz) the person sharing the office with you, or you dread ( = przera?a ci?) the buzz ( = ha?as, harmider) of the open-space office, then that job probably isn’t good for you!

Me? I dreaded the company of Ewa and Grzesiek in the teachers’ room. Whenever they entered the room, they gave vent to ( = dawali uj?cie) their boisterous ( = ha?a?liwe) natures, starting shouting about their day, bantering  ( = przyjacielskie przekomarzanie si?) with others, and generally stealing the show ( = ?ci?gaj?c na siebie ca?? uwag?). I totally abhorred ( = nienawidzi?am) that – all I wanted was a little peace and quiet to actually prepare for classes and do my job! So I have to admit that getting rid of Ewa and Grzesiek was one of the biggest perks ( = zalety) of quitting that job! Yup, I’m anti-social! ;)
