Job Post Perfection: 7 Tips for Recruiters to Craft the Ultimate Listing

As a recruiter, isn’t it your ultimate goal to attract the best talent for your organization? According to SHRM, 86% of recruiters & 62% of employers, the current job market is entirely candidate-driven. But, what does this mean for you?

Given the state of 2024's competitive job market, crafting the perfect job post is what makes all the difference. A well-crafted job post is pivotal since it not only entices potential candidates but also provides them with crucial information about the role and company.

Therefore, to help you master this art, we've put together a comprehensive guide on creating the perfect job post.

Start with an Attention-grabbing Title

The first step in crafting a compelling job post is to give it an extremely striking title. Always make sure that it is concise, clear, and representative of the role. Using industry-specific keywords while avoiding jargon that might confuse candidates is always a good idea. A strong title sets the tone for the rest of the job post and encourages potential applicants to read further.

Introduce the Company and Culture

Next, begin the job post by providing a brief but impactful introduction to the company. Here you can describe the organization's mission, vision, and core values. Additionally, highlight the company culture and work environment. A Glassdoor study highlights that 96% of job seekers say it's important to work for a company that embraces transparency. Talented candidates are not just looking for a job; they also seek a workplace that aligns with their values and fosters professional growth.

A Job Description Clearly Defines the Role

Clearly Define the Role

The heart of the job post is truly the job description. Clearly define the role and its responsibilities while emphasizing upon the key tasks the candidate will be expected to perform. Be specific about the qualifications, skills, and experience required. Avoid using vague language and be transparent about any essential certifications necessary for the position.

Sell the Benefits and Perks

Beyond the salary, candidates are also interested in the benefits and perks that come with the job. According to Career Builder, 61% of candidates said they wanted the job post to talk about the total benefits package. Therefore, mention healthcare plans, retirement benefits, paid time off, and any unique perks your company offers. Flexible work hours, remote/hybrid working options, and wellness programs are some of the other significant selling points.

Highlight Opportunities for Growth

Top-tier candidates are always on the lookout for opportunities to grow in their careers so be sure to showcase the potential for growth within your organization. Mention any training programs, workshops, or mentorship opportunities available to employees. You can also emphasize the role’s long-term benefits on their overall career trajectory.

Use Engaging Language

A popular study states that 52% of job seekers feel the quality of a job description is very or extremely influential on their decision to apply for a job. It’s always recommended to write the job post in a conversational and engaging tone. Avoid excessive formality or corporate jargon that might put off potential applicants. Use inclusive language to encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Candidates Must be Given Clear Instructions for Applying

Provide Clear Application Instructions

Lastly, it’s important to make the application process straightforward and clear. 1/5 candidates said they will not be willing to complete an application that takes them 20 minutes or more, says a Career Builder survey. Specify how candidates should apply, which documents they need to submit (e.g., resume, cover letter, portfolio), and where to send their applications. Don’t forget to mention the expected timeline for the hiring process so candidates know when to expect a response.

In conclusion, crafting the perfect job post is an essential skill for recruiters. By following these tips, you can create job posts that not only attract high-quality candidates but also reflect positively on your organization’s culture. Remember, a well-crafted job post is the first step to building a talented team that drives your company's success.

I would also add that it is important to use gender neutral language when crafting a JD, that way you reach a wider more diverse audience.
