I chatted with a friend who had been job hunting for a few months. last week, she received an email with a job offer. ?? She was very excited but also confused. ??The offer was lower than what was discussed in the past, and there was no mention of benefits, work hours etc. She was concerned that if she hesitated and started asking questions, the potential employer would back off.
My advice to her was to engage in a conversation with the employer to bridge the gap regarding the salary, get a better understanding of the full package, and ask to see the employment contract. Taking a few more hours to review and evaluate should not influence anything on the employer's side. If an employer is pressing you to accept something before you review all the terms, that should be considered a red flag.???
Congratulations—you've got a job offer! Here are a few tips before you accept: ?Know the market! You can get salary information from different places; consulting with people who already work in the market is one option, but you can also use tools like Glassdoor and Payscale to check salaries.
?Understand the full package: we usually tend to look at the base salary, but things like benefits, vacation days and bonuses are also worth money!. Good recruiters can walk you through the contract and explain the package and benefits. Don't be afraid to ask questions.?
??It is OK to negotiate! Let's assume you expected a higher salary, there are many creative ways to bridge a salary gap, from getting extra vacation days to a higher bonus percentage or agreeing to discuss a pay raise after X months.
