In July 2023, the job market grew by 187,000 jobs , and the national unemployment rate decreased from 3.6% to 3.5%. Dow Jones estimated a gain of 200,000 jobs , and the national unemployment rate would remain at 3.6%.
The July 2023 job growth was the second consecutive month of modest gains. The areas with the highest growth were health care, social assistance and financial activities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS revised June 2023 job growth from 209,000 to 185,000.
Recent BLS data showed job openings decreased from 9.8 million to 9.6 million .
