The Job Journal Guide To Recruiter Jargon

If you’re doing the LinkedIn thing right, whether you like it or not, you’ll be getting calls from recruiters.?

And if you’re not picking up the phone, then they’ll be sliding into your DM’s.?

And if they’re not doing that, then you’ll definitely be seeing a whole bunch of recruitment related posts in your newsfeed…you lucky, lucky people.?

Like any profession (why are you laughing?) recruiters have their own language and contrary to what you might believe, it’s not just different names for cocaine.?

That being the case, this week I’ve created this handy glossary of recruitment jargon so you can understand what the hell they’re on about.

Exciting opportunity

Literally any job regardless of whether it’s exciting or not.

Competitive salary

A salary so competitive the client has asked us not to tell you what it is.

Urgent requirement

Our client are shit at planning/ someone we placed fucked up and we need a backfill.

Candidate

A person.

Top Talent

Also a?person (preferably one who doesn’t refer to themselves as ‘Top Talent’)

Passive candidate

A person, in or out of work, who says they’re not looking for a job but they’re not NOT looking for job.

Active candidate

A person, in or out of work, who is most definitely looking for a job.?

Deal

A person getting a job.

Rebate

Money owed to a client if someone gets a job and fucks up/ leaves.

PSL-Preferred Supplier List

A bunch of recruitment agencies.

MSP-Managed Services Provider

A big recruitment agency managing a bunch of other recruitment agencies; can also recruit for the client.

Neutral Vendor

A big recruitment agency managing a bunch of other recruitment agencies; can’t recruit for the client.

Head Hunter

Posh recruiter.

Executive Search

Posh recruitment.

JD/ Job Description/ Spec

Boring piece of copy covering the remit and responsibilities of a job.

Job Ad/ Job Advert

A less boring but most of the time still boring piece of copy that should make you want to read the JD.

ATS/ Applicant Track System

Where your CV and contact information lives. (Protected by robots apparently)

EVP/ Employee Value Proposition

What a business does to draw you in and keep you there.

Retention

What businesses who invest in their EVP get.

Attrition

What businesses who don’t focus on their EVP get...

Very useful, Took me a while when I started contracting to work out how to focus my time, build my network and work with recruiters. It is very time consuming though I must say
