Have you started searching for a new job or career and you're not sure where to start??
It can be a daunting task looking for a new role. Whether you haven’t looked at the job market for a long time, or are just starting out, this guide will take you through the steps to ensure you feel more confident about applying for your dream job!
- Have a plan – what job are you looking for? Write down a list of jobs you would consider, and think about job titles. For example, if you are looking for a new HR position, you may want to also search for 'Employee Relations', 'Employee Engagement', 'Personnel', 'People Management', 'People and Culture'. Different companies advertise different job titles so be sure to research your industry and find out other relevant titles to search so you don’t miss any opportunities.
- Identify your transferable skills – think about your hard and soft skills (I have written a previous article on these). Identify what other positions you could do with the skills and experience you have gained in previous roles. More companies are open to looking at transferable skills to ensure they attract the right talent for their team so if you feel you could do a different type of role then don’t be afraid to apply for it!?
- Update your CV – I have published other posts providing advice on this, and there is a lot of fantastic information online. Proof read it then add it to the job boards so recruiters can contact you with new opportunities.
- Update your 'Socials' - according to LinkedIn recruitment statistics, for 77% of recruiters worldwide, this is the primary platform for finding skilled and educated employees. Your LinkedIn profile should reflect your CV and? include a profile photo.
- Start applying – I would advise you search on a mixture of platforms including Indeed, Reed, CV Library, Jobsite etc as well as social media such as LinkedIn. Companies and recruiters will often use a number of sites so you may find some of the same roles are advertised. It's best to cover all bases though so you don’t miss out on any opportunities.
- Keep track – however many jobs you apply for, I would advise you keep note of them. You never know when that call may come!
- Don't panic - job hunting can be tiresome, and you may feel you are not finding the right opportunities, or hearing back. Don't be afraid to call the company advertising the job for an update on your application. If you get rejected, then don't let it overwhelm you. Cross it off your list and move on to the next!
