Job Descriptions: A Wish List, Not a Tick List

When reading a job description, it's tempting to see it as a strict list of non-negotiable requirements. But in reality, most job descriptions are more of a wish list than a tick list. These lists describe the ideal candidate, but employers rarely expect applicants to tick every box. In fact, many of the most successful candidates are those who apply despite not meeting all the criteria.
Interestingly, there’s a well-documented gender difference in how men and women approach job applications. Studies have shown that women often feel they need to meet 100% of the criteria before applying, whereas men tend to apply even if they only meet a fraction of the requirements. This disparity means that many highly qualified women are holding themselves back from roles they are perfectly suited for, while men may more readily throw their hats in the ring.
But here’s the truth: no candidate is ever perfect for a role. Employers are not looking for perfection, they are looking for potential. They want to see how you can add value, contribute to the team, and grow into the role. Knowing your own worth and having the confidence to understand what you can bring to the table is essential.

So, when you see a job description that excites you but you feel you don’t quite meet every requirement, ask yourself this: What unique skills, experiences, or perspectives do I bring that make me a valuable asset? Don’t be deterred by the details, focus on your strengths and how you can make a difference.
Ultimately, applying for a job is a two-way process. You are evaluating whether the role is right for you just as much as the company is evaluating you. The best hires are often the ones who bring something unexpected to the table, someone who doesn't tick every box, but who brings fresh ideas, new energy, and potential.
So, next time you see a job listing that catches your eye, don’t hesitate. Apply with confidence, knowing that your value isn’t just about ticking boxes, it’s about demonstrating your ability to make an impact.
