Although the competencies and skills of employees are important in career planning and management, choosing the right company and working with the right manager significantly affects the careers of employees. Since employees cannot change the company culture, the harmony between the employee's values and the company culture is a necessity for a long-term successful career. In terms of management, the manager; It is necessary to support the employee's career development, development in skills and competence, networking, reveal the employee's potential, and also share success and objectively evaluate failures. Employees should use the results of their evaluation of company culture and managerial factors in their career plan creation and management processes.
Factors
Choosing the right company and working with the right manager, suitable with the core values of the employee, positively affects the careers of employees. It is important for employees to use strategic thinking in creating and managing their career plans.
Model
We present the following "Job Decision Model for Competent Employees" as a strategic thinking model for employees in order to provide input to career planning and management based on the evaluation of company culture and management factors.
The proposed model offers four options to employees, taking into account company culture on the horizontal axis and management factor on the vertical axis.
Resignation: If the company culture does not match the employee's values and the distance between the two is intolerable and the manager's evaluation is negative, the employee should not waste time in her/his job and consider resignation as an important option.
Prepare to resign: If the company culture does not match the employee's values and the distance between the two is intolerable and the manager's evaluation is positive, prepare for resignation as the company culture will dominate in the medium/long term and start new searches in line with the career plan without delay. In the short term, it may be possible to work within the comfort zone provided by the manager.
Patience: Even if the company culture is compatible with the employee's values, but the manager's evaluation is negative, the company culture will dominate in the medium and long term, so persevering in the company you work for and minimizing the negative effects caused by the manager/management through intra-organizational communication and escalation processes.
Commitment: Continuing to work in the company with dedication and commitment if the company culture is compatible with the employee's values and the manager's evaluation is positive.
Results:
Although the competencies and skills of employees are important in career planning and management, the company they work for and/or manager/management factors affect employees' careers positively or negatively. A strategic thinking model, which we call the Job Decision Model for Competent Employees, is provided in which employees can create input into the career plan creation and management processes based on the results of their evaluation of the company culture and managerial factors. Since company culture and management/manager evaluation are relative from person to person, the Job Decision Model does not provide employees with a method on how to evaluate company culture and managers. A strategic thinking model is presented regarding the company culture and how management/managers can act according to the evaluation results. According to the model results, employees can classify their current situation in four categories: "Resignation", "Prepare to resign", "Patience" and "Commitment".
