Job Applications: Understanding Deal Breaker Questions

There have been a lot of discussion lately around "deal breaker" or sometimes referred to as "knockout" questions on job applications.?
So from my perspective as someone who has been running a recruitment agency for the last 12 year, I want to share some of the reasons why deal breaker questions are used.
Strategic Screening:
Smart recruiters are always looking to streamline the hiring process while being able to identify the best-fit candidates as quickly as possible. Deal breaker questions help us pinpoint potential challenges or mismatches early on, saving both the candidate and the hiring team valuable time.
Efficiency in Matchmaking:
By addressing deal breakers upfront, we as recruiters, greatly increase the efficiency of the matchmaking process. The goal is to ensure that candidate’s background are in alignment with the positions we are looking to fill.
?
Quality Over Quantity:
It is also the recruiters goal not just to gather a bunch of applications, but to identify a select group of candidates that are highly qualified and aligned with the role and organization. Deal breaker questions help us do just this, by focusing on quality over quantity. In executive recruiting quality cannot be stressed enough.

Avoiding Misalignment:
Understanding deal breakers allows the candidates to self-assess (or self reflect) their fit for the role. It's a proactive approach to prevent potential misalignments or mismatches. Another goal (or hope) is to ensure that everyone's time is respected throughout the hiring journey.
Transparent Communication:
Good recruiters believe in open and transparent communication that is why I feel it is necessary to explain the use of deal breakers and my hope is that candidates understand the what and why they are used.
Please understand, the goal is not to disqualify, but to find the best match for both the candidate and for the company.?

All the best in 2024!

10 个月I think one of the hardest things for job seekers, especially newly transitioning military members, is to understand this process. The company is simply trying to find the best fit candidate for the role they have open.?There is nothing personal about this process.??Job seekers owe it to themselves to do the research and target the position they are most qualified for and to seek out additional skills and qualifications to meet the requirements of desired roles.??Unfortunately, many of the military transitioning programs fill the member’s head with the idea that just showing up to an interview as a veteran will get you 6 figures.
