IS THE DREAM OVER? DREAM ON!

Well, here we are in the mediaeval city of Perigueux, feeling rather down. We should be attending the guitar concert this evening in celebration of my father’s life. We’re not. Far from it. Instead, we are in a poky room in the IBIS Hotel Bauzalac, France that forms part of the very useful hotel chain that is Accor Group. We are feeling a little disconsolate and downcast.

But is the electric dream over? What happens next?

Well, it so happens that our journey had a dual mission. Triple in fact.

1.Have a complete getaway break.

2.Get to my father’s memorial concert.

3.Launch JLR PRIVéE international private members club, Madrid branch, in association with a number of football associates and clients, including the Director of Real Madrid FC Women’s Team, Ana Rossell, a lady I met many years ago and who I wrote about in my book, ‘Notes from Abroad, Home & The Road’ 2018-2022.

We have already organised an inaugural club lunch in Madrid with her and our newly-appointed JLR PRIVéE Madrid Agent, José-ángel Mayayo, as well as have tickets for the Real Madrid v Sporting Huelva match on Sunday 12 February, 5pm.

So. We failed the first challenge, but there were very good reasons why it became mission impossible, including:

  1. Two and a half days broken down and stuck in Granville, Normandy, as a result of connectivity problems.
  2. App and WiFi problems.
  3. Broken or malfunctioning charging points.
  4. A confusing and overwhelming multitude of different systems and payment methods.
  5. ‘Badges’.
  6. Foreign language issues (and we are ex language teachers!).

I will look in greater detail at this list of issues that meant we just didn’t get very far, or very quickly. In due course. I will also offer a series of first-hand fixes, tricks and tips that - if we had known beforehand - would have made our lives much, much easier, and might even have meant that we made our ultimate destination in time.

And so, we have recalibrated the journey and adjusted our target. But can we get to this one in time for the kick off, at 5 pm on Sunday 12 February? 850 kms still left to do. 7 days precisely. Vamos!
