Although April is slowly coming to an end, we are still impressed by the momentum of the Warsaw IT Days (WDI) and the number of substantive talks we listened to there.?

In addition to our coverage of the WDI, this edition also answers why it is worthwhile to have at least an initial plan for testing and what it is like with API and UI testing – is one of them better??

1. Is it worth having a testing plan? - Pawel Dolny

The article "Automated Software Testing Strategy" by Nikos Gkogktzilas emphasises the importance of having a structured testing strategy for software development. It highlights the need for a documented testing process, as the absence of such can lead to derailment in software testing efforts. The author proposes a strategy that focuses on various types of tests, including unit tests, system tests, integration tests, BDD tests, and smoke tests, each serving different purposes and targeting different aspects of the software. This approach aims to test software at different levels and based on different value outcomes, ensuring that each type of test is handled by the appropriate stakeholders. The strategy also addresses the challenges of implementing such a testing stack, acknowledging the pressure and deadlines that can lead to poor testing practices.?

?

The article concludes by suggesting that having an initial plan for testing can significantly improve the results of software development projects despite the complexity and effort required to implement it correctly.?

2. API or UI testing – is one of them better? – Pawel Dolny

The article "Bridge between UI and API Testing" by Arek Frankowski critiques the perspective that API testing is superior to UI testing, as presented in a white paper by Karate Labs. Frankowski argues that both UI and API testing methodologies have their strengths and limitations, and a balanced approach is essential for comprehensive software testing.?

He points out that modern UI testing frameworks can efficiently manage complexities such as element wait times and synchronisation with external calls, challenging the notion of API testing as inherently simpler. Additionally, Frankowski disputes the claim that API testing more accurately simulates end-user workflows, emphasising the importance of UI testing in capturing user interactions and usability issues. The article also addresses the stability and data coverage of both testing methodologies, highlighting that both can exhibit flakiness and that API testing does not necessarily provide better data coverage.?

Frankowski concludes by advocating for a testing strategy that appreciates the unique strengths of both API and UI testing, ensuring robust software quality assurance.?

3. Warszawskie Dni Informatyki through the eyes of Wojciech Zi?ba ?

The 15th edition isn't the fullest of anniversaries, even by IT standards (we're looking forward to the 2^4th edition, which is next year ??), but Warsaw IT Days’ (WDI) organisers decided to show that any reason is good enough to do something bigger and better. The Warsaw IT Days gathered more than 10,000 attendees this year, who could choose from more than 300 presentations in 3 formats - VoD, online, and live events. The culmination of the work of the organisers, speakers, programme board members, and dozens of volunteers was Saturday's conference at the most iconic venue on the Warsaw map - PGE Narodowy .??

The momentum, the venue, and the huge interest show that by combining a professional approach and paying attention to the quality of the selected presentations, it is possible to create an event in which everyone from the IT industry will find something for themselves. WDI is a conference whose greatest advantage is not only the waterfalls of knowledge pouring out of ?each room, but a fantastic menagerie of people from all corners of the IT world - from specialists in the still hottest topic of artificial intelligence, through experts in all types of programming languages and technologies, to masters of social media and their input on how to popularize and propagate the knowledge sharing in modern times.?

It is the inspiring discussions with these people that are the greatest value of the event, which is now history, but the knowledge and fantastic friendships will remain with us, hopefully for years to come.?

?? Looking forward for next year's event already!
