Building for the Unpredictable: How Engineered Aluminium Enhances Disaster-resilient Infrastructure?

Mr. A. S. Ganesan Associate VP - Domestic Marketing & Sales, Jindal Aluminium Ltd

India ranks among the top ten disaster-prone countries globally, facing many natural and human-induced factors contributing to its vulnerability. Among its 36 states and union territories, 27 are identified as disaster-prone regions. A disaster-proof infrastructure becomes a cornerstone of modern construction in a developing nation like India. Materials with inherent strength, durability, and adaptability become paramount in ensuring the longevity and reliability of built structures. By leveraging such materials, engineers and architects can design infrastructure capable of withstanding the dynamic and ever-changing environmental conditions, safeguarding lives and property against the impact of natural disasters.

The Need for Disaster-proof Infra-structure in Rapid Urbanization

The urgent need for disaster-proof infrastructure has never been more pressing in the current rapid urbanisation. Given its expansive geographical area, India is highly susceptible to natural calamities. Approximately 58.6 per cent of the country's landmass is vulnerable to earthquakes, 12 per cent to floods or river erosion, and 75 per cent of coastline is at risk of cyclones or tsunamis, as per a report published by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). As cities expand and populations surge, the vulnerability of urban areas to uncertain climatic disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes or floods, escalates. Such catastrophic events threaten human lives and wreak havoc on essential infrastructure, disrupting communities and economies for years. Moreover, traditional building materials are falling short in extreme conditions, increasing the impact of disasters on infrastructure and human welfare. Therefore, investing in disaster-proof infrastructure is not merely a matter of preparedness but a crucial step toward ensuring urban centres' safety, stability, and sustainability.

Engineered Aluminium: Safeguarding Against Disaster

Aluminium is a formidable ally in the quest for disaster-resilient infrastructure. With engineering, its inherent strength, lightweight nature and exceptional durability, this resourceful metal offers a range of advantages that outweigh weak spots linked to traditional building materials.

Strong Structural Integrity Against Calamities: Aluminium alloys can be an ideal choice for infrastructure built in disaster-prone areas such as earthquakes or landslides due to their remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, solidifying the structural integrity. Engineered alumi-nium products such as roofing materials, cladding, window frames, door frames and staircases enable structures to withstand extreme forces compared to traditional materials while maintaining stability and creating a safe space for inhabitants.

Resistance to Environmental Degra-dation: One of aluminium's protective advantages is its inherent resistance to corrosion and degradation, even in harsh environments prone to flooding or cyclones. It ensures longevity and durability, essential for infrastructure built in areas where environmental factors may accelerate deterioration. Engineered aluminium products such as rods, wiring, floors, grills and railings safeguard buildings against decay and damage caused by exposure to water and other environmental factors.

Flexibility for Anti-Seismic Design: Engineered aluminium facades possess the flexibility to absorb and dissipate seismic forces to preserve structural stability in the catastrophic events of an earthquake. It acts as a lightweight framework affixed to the building, exhibiting sturdiness to prevent collapse and adaptability to withstand stretching or contracting induced by these seismic movements. It minimises the risk of structural collapse during earthquakes, ensuring the safety of occupants and reducing property damage.

Protection for Defense Infra-structure: In defence or highly protected govern-ment buildings, engineered aluminium's high resilience makes it a preferred material for blast-proof buildings. Its ability to withstand explosive impacts offers unparalleled protection, ensuring the safety and security of critical infra-structure. Engineered aluminium framing systems for windows, storefronts and curtain walls are retrofitted to these ballistic load specifications to ensure their durability.

Looking ahead, the trajectory of engineered aluminium in protection against unknown disasters is poised for further advancement. Emerging trends in engineered aluminium technology, inclu-ding innovative alloys and manufacturing processes, hold promise for even greater strength in construction. It is imperative to prioritise continued research and innovation in this field, as it enables constructing a safer, more resilient world, one aluminium structure at a time.
