Jigsaw Piece or Haystack Needle?

As you prepare for 2023, which picture above captures one of your thoughts. If you are looking for a new employee or those hard-to-find IC’s for one of your PCB’s, you may pick the needle on the left. If you are an astute politician, then it may be the jigsaw piece on the right. Readers experienced with “Executive Search” may say the answer is a blend of the two. This may be politically correct; as is the colour grey and smorgasbords. Here is a thought jogger for your 2023 “to do” list.

The jigsaw is rarely laid for planning ahead. However, you may jumble the pieces in your mind. Typically, the question is one of priorities. Which piece is the next step in the plan moving forward. Stop for a moment and reflect on those crime movies with the post-it notes on a white board. Here is the jigsaw in action. It takes me back to pre-computer screen strategy sessions. These sessions were often in front of a white board with notes. When was the last time you posted notes to form a jigsaw?

There is often a significant problem. Not all the information is available to place pieces on the board. There are missing "holes" or “blocks of pieces” – its not a simple single piece. Aha… welcome to ambiguity and thought training in a world otherwise flush with on-line information.

The thought training that has worked for me is to identify pieces you may call “assumptions”. Make a call on these assumptions first, then progressively validate them. So its “assume” and “validate” not “let me find out that information”. As you validate your assumptions, the missing piece becomes clearer and clearer. Then bingo, it stands out as obvious. This process can be superfast in days or weeks, certainly not months.

Once the missing jigsaw pieces are identified, are you really looking for a needle in a haystack? My experience is the needle becomes a pitch-fork and much easier to find.
