JGo Forward: Starting Again

JGo Forward: Starting Again

Working in the field of #education has been the most professionally satisfying career I could have chosen. All of the six land-grant universities where I have worked—Texas A&M University, Clemson University, Utah State University, New Mexico State University, the University of Houston and Auburn University—are special places with a unique family bound together by a rich heritage, common purpose and concern for one another.

After 10 years at #Auburn, Susie and I decided it was time to pass the torch and retire from a job I loved. Our hearts, however, never left, and when I was asked to once again lead my alma mater, refusing never crossed my mind. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to help others. Looking forward, I am eager to use this space to expand upon much of what I have learned during my time as a faculty member and, later, in leadership of large, complex organizations.

But to paraphrase Greek philosopher Heraclitus, no man ever steps in the same river twice, because it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man. Technological advances, shifting demographics and evolving political contexts are rapidly changing the landscape of everything around us, including higher education. We live in a different world than when I started as president at Auburn and a different world than when I retired (the first time) just three years ago. It’s a world where staying ahead of the curve is essential to economic opportunity and thriving communities.

Regardless of the changes and challenges we face, our most fundamental mission remains the same: We serve our communities through instruction, we discover through research and we improve lives through outreach. And as a result, we help people reach their goals.

Every other Thursday, I will reflect on #HigherEducation today and in the future, all based on my career experiences. Likewise, I’ll use this space to talk about two other issues—#Leadership and #EconomicDevelopment—that I view as essential to quality of life and the mission of research- and service-focused universities. My ultimate hope is that you find they add value to you personally and professionally.

President Gogue, Thank you for accepting my request to connect on LinkedIn. I am very excited to know that you are back in the driver’s seat at Auburn. I am an AU graduate, , 1986, and was born and raised in Auburn. I moved to Houston in 2000 and see today, the development and guidance you set in place at the University of Houston. I look forward to your Thursday articles and especially the sharing of your ideas and experiences regarding Economic Development. From 1987 to 1997, I served as The Director of Planning and Economic Development for the Regional Planning Commission in Opelika. I thoroughly enjoyed those 10 years of being able to develop projects that created jobs, and provided much needed services to the region. I wanted you to know that our family is deeply rooted in the history of Auburn. My grandfather of several generations back, since 1836, made each and every brick in Samford Hall and other buildings as well. The daisy brick is in memory of his 4 year old daughter. His name was Lewis Allen Foster. Our family is extremely proud of our Auburn heritage and entrust our belief in your leadership. Thank you, Dona
