The Jewel in the Crown
I have seen a picture of Queen Victoria receiving a jewel from an Indian Raj to put in her crown. The truth is that the "Jewel in the Crown" was India. The most prize possession of the British Empire that brought fortune to the East India Company was a country with much to offer the world. However, taken for granted by the British, India was the location of such revolts as the Sepoy uprising of 1856 and the non-violent demonstrations of Gandhi that eventually divided the country.
Public oil and gas companies have jewels in their crown. We often do not recognize them, and when we do, we often as not fail to develop our jewels properly. The jewel in a public company may be that set of properties which gives us cash flow or it may be the set of properties, which when properly developed make the value of the company increase significantly. Whichever it is, failure to properly develop the jewel is wrong.
Concentrating our efforts to develop the jewel in our crown takes planning and thought. Sometimes it takes help from the outside in the form of capital or advice. We should not fail to take outside advice by letting our ego get in the way. Further, we should not take the jewel in our crown for granted.
