Propping up a sustainable future of flight ??????

This week's edition is guest written and edited by Harvey Matthewson a talented young journalist and private pilot, with a special interest in the sector. On the 24th and 25th of September a plethora of propellers descended on the ExCeL Centre in London – but not in the traditional way.
DroneX, a show paired with the Advanced Air Mobility Expo, is an event designed to bring together key stakeholders from across all sectors of the UAV (Uncrewed Aerial Vehiclel) and AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) ecosystem.
This year, DroneX heard insights from keynote speakers including Sdn Ldr Matt Quinney from the UK's Ministry of Defence, Gary Cutts of UKRI - Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge (IDC) , the British government's research and innovation funding body, and Kurt Swieringa of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Bristow Group CEO David Stepanek FRAeS used his keynote to talk about his company's newly published white paper titled ‘AAM: A Philosophical Guide For Early Operations’. It explores the philosophies underpinning use cases for eVTOLS, and makes several recommendations to ensure safety is considered for AAMaircraft and to encourage the industry to refrain from scaling too quickly.
On the first day of DroneX, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) released their BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) operations roadmap. Titled ‘Delivering Scalable UAS BVLOS in the Specific Category’ – or CAP 3038 to its friends - the document sets out the CAA’s plan to enable scalability for UASes in the specific category. This includes drones weighing up to 25kg and flying higher than 400ft in what the UK's regulator considers medium risk conditions.
The CAA have shown a keenness to enable BVLOS operations and the roadmap outlines plans to establish routine operations by 2027. For this to be achieved, the CAA intends to demonstrate integrated BVLOS operations in Temporary Reserved Area sandboxes, which will provide a test and evaluation capability. This will evolve into a collaborative surveillance environment with an air traffic management system for low-level airspace and allow for operations to scale quickly.

Future flight must be used to further civilisation and at this year’s DroneX, beneath the palpable excitement, there was a clear sense of responsibility. This responsibility has been demonstrated by the sector already with an emphasis on UAV’s being used to transport medical supplies and track the effects of global warming. The only question now is what will propel us to a cleaner smarter future? Will it be jets becoming cleaner or are we heading back to propellers?
