While PFAS chemistry and uses are as complex as the dialogue surrounding them, a simple structured approach to managing them is essential — and attainable. Our Global PFAS Technical Lead, Dr. Rosa Gwinn, discusses the importance of a three-pronged strategy for success: prevention, control and elimination. ? "To see the bigger picture, we need to step back a few paces and explore how and why PFAS enter the environment, controlling those mechanisms via prevention and bookending that with cleaning up what PFAS are already out there," writes Rosa. "This three-pronged approach —?prevent, control, eliminate?— can help us tackle what otherwise seems like an enormous problem." ? Ciro Viscotti’s fascination with chemistry, along with his desire to make a positive impact on communities and the environment,?led him to join us as a graduate chemical engineer?20 years ago. Today, he works as a principal engineer with AECOM - Environmental Services, tackling some of Italy’s most complex PFAS remediation challenges. One example is the reclamation of a historic industrial plant in Brescia, Italy, that dates back to the early 1900s. Once used to produce caustic soda and chlorine derivatives, the plant is now abandoned, with 110,000 square meters of area rendered unusable due to heavily contaminated soil and groundwater, and pollution spreading even outside of the site. Alongside Italy’s Environmental Ministry, Ciro and his team are developing solutions to remediate and redevelop the site. Upon completion, it will be opened to the public for the first time after several decades of disuse.? ? Khaled is a horticulturist with 23 years’ experience in landscape project management. Over the past two decades, he has worked on major landscape projects spanning three different climate zones in Amman, Jordan and the Red Sea.? He is currently serving as nursery and soft landscaping manager for the Diriyah Gate Phase II, a historic project that aims to transform the Ad-Diriyah area into an iconic cultural cornerstone and must-see destination while implementing innovative solutions to make lasting positive impacts on the environment.? ? “Diriyah Gate Phase II is more than a project; it’s a symbol of historical, cultural and tourism evolution, central to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030,” he writes. “The transformation of Diriyah exemplifies our commitment to balancing development with preservation.”? ?
