I have ingraved you on the palms of my hands
Did you know that Jesus has a tattoo? Would you be surprised to learn that it is an image of You? Look at Isaiah 49:15-16.
15"Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you. 16 Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands..."
As a child of God, you are deeply loved by the Creator of the Universe, and the Creator of You. He loved you so much that he left the palatial and peaceful reality of Heaven to become one of us, a physical human being. It is difficult for us to imagine the Creator of humans, becoming part of his creation, specifically to become the Kinsman Redeemer, a close relative who could pay the ransom required for redemption from our fallen state. John 3:16-17 says,
16"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.…"
He became the human, Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary and son of God. He came to show his love for us by laying down his life for our Forgiveness and Salvation (redemption). By his affliction and death we are healed. By his resurrection to life, we have eternal life.
Is it any surprise to discover that he carries an image of each of his redeemed in the palm of his hands? That image is formed in scar tissue from the nails at the cross.
When my children were little, I would leave home before dark to go to work, and often return home after dark, especially in winter. Each day I would ask my Father in Heaven to watch over my family. I would often draw a small cross on the center of my palm with the first initial of my wife, and each of my 3 kids in the corners of the cross, Peg, Mike, Michelle, Matt. During the day, I would often see that "tattoo" and remember to pray for their safety, as well as thank the Lord for this great blessing of my family. When I read this scripture about the Lord's image of me, I was deeply moved by His Love for me.
Yesterday, on my 67th birthday, one of my calls was from my baby sister, Marilyn. She began to thank me for things I had done for her, things long forgotten. I helped her learn Algebra, drove her to high school during her freshman year, introduced her to all the cool Senior boys, and a few other good things. From her perspective, those acts of love (Love is a Verb...Just Do It!) will never be forgotten. I will carry her words of appreciation and respect with me the rest of my life. I have engraved them on the palms of my hands, on the tablets of my heart. Like a mother with a newborn baby at her breast, I will not forget... but even if I do, The Lord Jesus will never forget me. Every time he looks at the palms of his hands, he is reminded of the price he paid to bring me into his Presence, and introduce me to the Father.
Blessings,
Dwight
