JERRY JONES’ HOPE FOR THE COWBOYS DISAPPEARED WITH HIS LIPS.

JERRY JONES’ HOPE FOR THE COWBOYS DISAPPEARED WITH HIS LIPS.

Take a look at Dallas Cowboys’ Owner Jerry Jones during his recent post-game interviews. After another humiliating team loss, Jerry compressed his lips every few seconds as he answered questions. Two months ago, Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy showed the same facial expression after a loss. What does it mean when you see this?

People compress their lips when they are experiencing negative feelings. The more intense the negativity, the more intense the lip compression. As you can see in the photos, Jerry’s lips have completely disappeared and the muscles around his mouth are very tight. In the second photo, the corners of the mouth are being drawn down into a frown.

Look for lip compression when you’re in a meeting. As in Jerry Jones’ interview, the expression may not stay on the face for long. It can appear and disappear in a split second, revealing a fleeting negative thought or feeling. That’s referred to as a “micro expression.”

While Jerry Jones wasn’t trying to cover his disappointment and frustration, sometimes people in business will not volunteer their negative feelings. Noticing lip compression will clue you in that there’s an objection. If you are trying to get buy-in, it’s important to uncover the issue and overcome it while you’re still in the room.

How would you handle it if you saw a prospect compress their lips while you were presenting your proposal?

Yes and there is a lot more to it than just the superficial body language. Culture plays a role as well.

Very good points, Melinda. It is hard --- if not impossible --- to lie with body language. You know that very well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Yes pursed lips do tell a story and not a good one!!

Melinda yikes! I see that lip compression every time I tell my husband about a new house project! If this were a a client, I would acknowledge it and perhaps pause and say to that client I sense that you’re struggling with this why don’t we take a second and talk through it together tell me your thoughts.
