Jennifer Garner lets her kids experience ‘benign neglect.’ Here’s why you should, too

Actress Jennifer Garner recently opened up in an interview about her hands-off parenting style that some experts believe gives kids “room to grow.”

THE BIG PICTURE

  • When asked about her parenting method on NBC’s “Today,” the “Alias” star said, “I want to be around. But I also think it’s OK if they suffer from a little bit of benign neglect,” adding, “I’m not trying to live their life, and I don’t mind that they see that I love mine.”
  • While some may think Garner’s strategy allows children to act like they’re 13 going on 30, parenting coach Oona Hanson believes benign neglect is “likely a playful phrase that offers an alternative to helicopter parenting.”
  • Hanson adds: “This interview has caught attention because I think a lot of parents are hungry for permission or role models on how to take a step back from that kind of intensive parenting.”
  • Those striving for this alternative are letting their little daredevils make mistakes and figure things out on their own and “aren’t feeling so anxious about whether or not their child can handle it,” Hanson says.

IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK

  • Ensnaring your kids in a parent trap and being involved with everything they do can instill in them a sense of learned helplessness, where they start to feel like ‘I can’t do anything on my own,’” according to Hanson.
  • When parents or caregivers show confidence that their children don’t need them right away, it can help communicate that it’s OK to feel stressed or anxious or even fail at times, according to Dr. Janine Domingues, a senior psychologist at the Child Mind Institute in New York.
  • It’s also important for your kids “to see you prioritize you so that when they grow up they know that it’s really beneficial for them to prioritize themselves and have an identity” outside of being a parent, she adds.

HOW TO LOOK THE OTHER WAY

  • Unfortunately, there are no exact rules as to when to be involved with your child and when to step back. All children have their own needs and development, Hanson says.
  • But there are ways to start incorporating some “benign neglect,” such as setting up an environment that’s productive — both physically and mentally. Stock up on arts and crafts supplies and board games so kids can find things to do other than starting at the TV.
  • If children come to you with a problem, Domingues recommends acknowledging the difficulty and seeing what they have tried or might do to solve it, before jumping in yourself.
  • Parenting writer Catherine Newman says she tried to be “all in or all out” with her children. “My goal was either to be absolutely present with them playing a game or talking to them or reading with them … or to be completely absent so that they could get involved in something else,” she says.

Rare campaign move: Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is making Social Security and Medicare reform a key component of her bid for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Campaigning politicians typically take a hands-off approach to the two popular programs over fears of alienating voters, who polls show generally oppose major entitlement changes. Read the full CNN article for details of Haley’s plan and how it’s winning her support from deep-pocketed donors, even if voters’ opinions are TBD.

Haley is one of four Republican candidates set to square off at tomorrow’s fourth GOP primary debate (Former President Donald Trump is again skipping it). A week from today, CNN will kick off back-to-back nights of town halls spotlighting 2024 hopefuls in the key state of Iowa. Jake Tapper will moderate as Florida Gov. New pricing model: CVS is changing the way it prices prescription drugs. Right now, the prices customers pay and payments pharmacies receive are largely determined by middlemen known as pharmacy benefit managers, who negotiate rebates from drug manufacturers to insurers with complex reimbursement formulas not directly based on what pharmacies spent. CVS says a simpler formula is expected to launch in 2025 and will provide more transparency for customers.

Cooling labor market: The US labor market is showing some more slack. There were 8.7 million available jobs in October, the lowest level in two and a half years, according to a new report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. New hires dipped slightly, quits fell a little, and layoffs ticked up. The data is good news for the Federal Reserve's effort to bring down inflation.

23andMe ... and maybe a few hackers: The genetic testing firm tells CNN nearly seven million customer profiles were accessed by a hacker or hackers, who were able to see some users’ ancestry reports, zip codes and birth years. A company spokesperson didn’t say who carried out the hack, which appears to have had a much broader impact than what 23andMe reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday.

Hottest decade ever: The past decade was the hottest one in history as climate change “surged dramatically, ” according to a World Meteorological Organization report released today at the COP28 conference in Dubai. Rising concentrations of planet-heating pollution in the atmosphere fueled record land and ocean temperatures from 2011-2020, the report says, continuing a trend that’s seen each decade since the 1990s warmer than the one before it. The future role of fossil fuels (like oil, coal and natural gas) — the main driver of the climate crisis — is a major sticking point at COP28 , with world leaders considering an agreement calling for their “phase out” even as they meet in a major oil-producing country .

New old-fashioned way: Sixty-five years after its release, Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” is on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. That makes 78-year-old Lee one of the oldest artists ever to top the chart. She was just 13 when she recorded it in 1958. For the song’s anniversary, she filmed a new music video. Lee’s isn’t the only holiday song lighting up the top 10 .

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift practically owns the rest of the Billboard real estate, with five albums currently in the top 10 .

My son was living in his truck for about 6 months after the pandemic shut down college campuses. He didn’t like college mainly because he learns better in a class setting. He enjoys being around his peers. It was very difficult to find an apartment manager that would allow him to sign a lease. He didn’t have enough time on his new job to qualify to sign onto an agreement. It was getting close to the frigid winter months. I spent sometime with him on the weekends in some air b n bs for a weekend. He was trying to figure it out. I finally said pain is the best teacher. With this winter coming soon. I am sure you will figure it out. He was under stress and found a apartment that would let him sign on.

We must be attuned to the child's individual pace and needs. There is a gradual process of individuation that must be respected and which differs from child to child, but the parent must also be there for them when they return for comfort. A parent must be able to let go and trust sometimes, maybe we have to pray. Gradually enlarging boundaries are needed. The child needs to know they are loved and can talk about anything with their parents. They need support, encouragement and interest. I think neither helicopter parenting nor benign neglect are appropriate terms for the complex, intuitive and changing dynamics of ideal parental involvement.
