"Jeffrey"

"Jeffrey"

Got lost
running through
stranger's yards
looking only
for yours.
Didn't know
it would be
this hard!
Nervous that
I was running late.
Out of breath.
Made you wait.
The houses all
looked the same,
different colored paint,
same frame.
Shoebox lawns
neatly mowed.
As I found
your door
lost all sense
of composure.
Dropped my change
on the floor.
Hung my coat
crooked.
Wasn't really
sure-footed.
Alas, we meet
again,
my friend.
Face to face
Intense,
guarded
but
still the same.
Same old laughter.
Same old warmth.
Same old sweetness.
The words just flowed
like sparkling wine
poured from a cup
of an old valentine.
Inside
he planted a seed
that soon would grow
the moment
I was to leave.
Sure enough,
it did indeed!
When I hit
the afternoon sun
offshoots sprout
where there
was none.
Lost whatever
I came in with.
Unencumbered
and  feathery
since my tete-a'-tete
with Jeffrey.
