Quote:

Without any feeling of jealousy or rivalry, make the wish that they might become even more glorious." - Santideva

Reflection:

It's a natural tendency to rejoice in our own success and feel envy or jealousy when others succeed. But what good does our jealousy do us? Does it get us what the other person has? No. It only brings us discontentment.

As individuals who are constantly seeking happiness, this approach to life is counter-productive. We'd be better off rejoicing in their success just as we rejoice in our own.

At any given time, there are good things happening to people all around us. Imagine how much joy you'd feel if you could find it within yourself to be happy for them too.

Action:

The next time someone shares news of a promotion, pregnancy, or purchasing their dream house, make the deliberate choice to rejoice in their success. You can take as an opportunity to practice what's called compersion—the act of wholeheartedly participating in someone else's joy.

You'll be surprised to discover that you can experience true joy through this simple choice. And you'll now have even more opportunities to rejoice since you can revel in more people's success than just your own.
