Jazz Samba . . . Music for the Soul
“Was there ever a phenomenon among jazz albums to compare with Jazz Samba by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd?” This prodigious album was recorded on February 13, 1962. Jazz aficionado's would be hard pressed to find its equivalent today. I discovered Stan Getz and his lush tenor saxophone style back in the early seventies. When you add the famed guitarist Byrd to the mix, well the rest is history as they say.
Yes, we were shooting film-based cameras back then and Kodachrome was the color photographer’s film of choice. My image capture is now digital, but my mantra is still the same as back then – get it right in the camera and keep things clean and simple. Let the performance in front of you tell the story. I think artists Getz and Byrd would agree. This album concentrates on a fine tuned performance of rhythm and harmony that does not get too complicated. It becomes an artistic expression of pure, simplified listening pleasure.
After a long day capturing images, I cannot think of a better way to unwind than listening to their music. I can promise, it will caress you with its lush melodies . . . if you allow it! So pour your favorite glass of red and let the warmth of the music melt into your soul. Enjoy!
