Jaylen Brown buys a building. Almost.
A few months ago, we brought you a story about just what a “Black Wall Street” might mean here in Boston, with Celtics shooting guard Jaylen Brown playing a prominent role.
This week, real estate reporter Greg Ryan got an exclusive inside scoop on how Brown very nearly made his idea come to life right in Downtown Crossing. Sources tell Ryan that the Celtics star came close in recent months to buying 399 Washington St., a five-story building that has sat unused since Barnes & Noble closed its store there almost 20 years ago.
His plan? A Black-owned restaurateur or retailer at street level and Brown’s new startup accelerator on the upper floors. The good news? Malia Lazu , a Boston-based consultant who's working with Brown, says the idea may still come to fruition in another building.

What is 'power'?
What do you think of when you think of “power?” We define it as influence and activity, and not simply top-down leadership. In this year’s Power 50: Movement Makers awards, we sought to highlight and recognize grass-roots, boots-on-the-ground leaders bringing about change in communities across Boston. No elected officials here. This week, we held a gathering Wednesday night in the Seaport to celebrate the winners, and offer this gallery with thumbnail profiles of each .
