Jay Patel was lucky - his words, not mine

Why was that??
Jay Patel was in one of their pharmacies having a blood pressure check to experience first-hand the service pharmacies offer to find hypertension in the community. The reading was “slightly high”, he says, blaming it on his busy day – as we all like to do…
However, the pharmacist and the team urged Jay to have further investigations, which lead to detecting arterial ageing (or stiffening), leading to “narrowing” of the coronary arteries, similar to his dad, Kirit Patel, who died from a heart attack.
A few months later, Jay had "brutal" open heart surgery with a bypass.
In normal circumstances, If Jay’s BP was just lower than the guidelines of 140/90 mmHg, he would have been advised about diet and healthy living and sent on his way. His ethnicity would potentially not have been considered and his family history would not have been recorded either.
So, Jay would have been on his way, none the wiser.
Let’s look at some what ifs:
What if
o?? the staff were not persistent and assertive – he is the boss after all.
o?? that BP check was an advanced cardiac check – same time (60sec), cuff on the arm. Immediate confirmation there is trouble.
o?? Jay completed his profile including ethnicity, family history, own history, lifestyle, stress, anxiety, etc. Immediate personal CVD risks in RAG code.
o?? Jay could see the future cardiovascular event coming after 60 sec. Call to action.
o?? Jay was much younger; the artery damage has started without the BP increasing. The damage could have been reversed.
Imagine:
–??????????? Everyone could walk into a pharmacy, have a cardiac assessment (including accurate BP over 10sec average) and walk away with the results on their phone.
–??????????? Walking out knowing your own heart health comparable to healthy individuals in your own ethnic or gender group – not generic numbers.
–??????????? As with Jay, is family history affecting you.
–??????????? You can see if your BP meds is working and what it does.
–??????????? You can see if your lifestyle/exercise is good for your heart.?

5 天前This is so powerful and an incredible example of why screening for BP is so important! Could not agree with this post more. Pharmacy is well placed to be the leaders when it comes to prevention for cardiovascular disease. Jay Patel Great to see Day Lewis leading the way on this!
