?I originally posted this several years ago and knowing that Jay is performing at The Brown County Music Center next month, I decided to re-post it.
?If you ever want to have fun, book Jay Leno.
?If you ever want to meet somebody who will suddenly become your friend, book Jay Leno.
?When you look at the late-night TV hosts, Jay Leno is one of the very few that actively performed stand-up comedy during his tenure as host of The Tonight Show. After he retired from The Tonight Show he continued to pursue additional bookings, and he always delivers!
?Jay is a very funny man, and his show is very clean. He actively interacts with the audience which enhances the show. Everybody knows that Jay Leno is a “car buff” and he has a fantastic garage / museum called Jay Leno’s Garage. On this particular show it was a benefit for Cancer Support Community. We asked Jay if we could get an auction package of a tour of his garage, and he said yes with one stipulation…. that he auctions this live on stage. Of course, we said yes!
?At the end of Jays hilarious set, he then told everybody about his Garage and that he was going to auction off a tour. He began and people started bidding. $5000, then $6000, then $7000…. all the way up to $10,000. He said sold…. then he looked at the person that came in second and asked if they would bid $10,000 and they said yes. Suddenly we have sold two of these packages. He then went to the third person that was actively bidding and that person agreed to $10,000 and boom, three sold! Jay wasn’t done, he then looked at another active bidder and that person agreed to $10,000! He then asked for one more bid of $10,000 and just like that, he sold a fifth package! $50,000 to the cause! We had no idea that one package would sell like this, but he sold five! Needless to say, we were grateful.
?Earlier in the day I arranged for a private tour of the basement of The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and our tour guide was noted IMS Track Historian Donald Davis. There are so many old antique cars and machines, and Jay seemed to be very familiar with most of these vehicles. It was as if he was the museum curator. When we arrived at the museum we were greeted by my longtime friend Doug Bowles the President of IMS. As we walked through the public part of the museum several people ran up to use and asked for a picture with Jay Leno. He obliged and was genuine and didn’t rush anybody.
?After the show Jay got in my car and we drove to the airport as he has his own jet and was going fly back to Southern California. He was hungry and wanted to stop at Steak ‘n Shake. The downtown location was packed as an Ariana Grande concert at The Fieldhouse had just ended and the place was crawling with teenagers. It was the only place that we went to without anyone recognizing Jay. I said there is a Steak ‘n Shake on the way to the airport, and we decided to go there. When we arrived, we went to the drive through as Jay was starved and he ordered 3 @ foot-long hot dogs and a Dr. Pepper. I also ordered something. They brought Jays food first and he looked at me and asked if he could eat in my car…. this is my brand-new RR Evoque. I said yes. He devoured the 3 @ foot-long hot dogs in a few minutes. He was done by the time we pulled out of the parking lot.
?As I dropped Jay off at his plane we hugged, and I reflected on what a great experience it was for everybody involved. I cannot wait to book Jay Leno again!
