Competing with friends in real time will be a gamechanger

#1 Beatsaber

Beatsaber is the pinnacle for a first VR experience. It's easy to pick up, understand and play with a difficulty progression tree that will keep you engaged and progressing for hundreds of hours. It's a classic "easy to play, impossible to master".

At the core, just a music rhythm game that is impeccably executed. So much so that Beat Games was acquired by Facebook and is soon to add it's biggest update ever, true multiplayer (not just leaderboards).

It's the must have game for all VR device owners that's casual, keeps you fit (especially with the new Oculus fitness tracking) and super fun if you have the songs you love. Personally, I got a huge high breaking into the Top 200 on the global leaderboards and enjoyed finishing sweating as much as a short HIIT class.

With 6 DLC Music Packs you're bound to find songs you love to jam too and can take it to the next level by trying those same songs out with modifiers (to make them easier/harder), changing other settings and even game mode type (180 & 360 degrees).

There is an added bonus that you can play with the mod community, uploading custom songs and beat mappings from an incredible community via SideQuest

I promise laughter & the humour of Rick & Morty

#2 Trover Saves the Universe

I might be biased here, but this is a must-play game for any Rick & Morty fan. Squanch Games by Justin Roiland is by far the funniest game experience I've ever had. I've genuinely had to pause the game at points as a burst out in laughter and have similarly been in complete shock at the ridiculousness of this game. The core of the game revolves around a "chair-opian" (you) and our protagonist "Trover" who you control as a character with a fascinating 3rd person perspective that opens the game up to some really unique perspectives and puzzles. Added with some outrageous decisions that you will instantly regret, this game breaks all the rules and is the most I've laughed in any game.

There's also a bonus free DLC once you've completed it too.

Light Saber & force battles in VR are as fun as you imagine

#3 Vader Immortal (I, II, III)

I believe this to be one of the highest quality games ever made in VR with the highest production value. The joy and fun of using a lightsaber & the force is unparalleled, the ultimate immersion into the Star Wars world is an out of this world experience which is helped further with a compelling story. The game is so good the only downside being how short it is, hence needing 3 episodes!

Dodging bullets will make you feel like you're in the Matrix

#4 Superhot

The game released in 2016 on console that even when it came out made everyone say "this game was made for VR…but released on console". A very fun time based game with a core mechanic that moves time forward as you move, the faster/more you move the more time moves forward. Using this core mechanic your goal is to dodge bullets and kill red enemies in a 360 environment using you’re a mixture of bullets, ninja stars and intuition.

Not as scary as it looks, but a thriller

#5 Red Matter

A close call for number 5, but Red Matter just edges it as I'm biased towards compelling story and puzzles. Red Matter is a puzzle game based on the Red Planet as you solve puzzles on an abandoned space station to discover what has happened. It's creepy but not scary and requires some of the best puzzles I've ever seen in VR combined with a story that keeps you scratching your head until the end and you realise how much deeper the story is than you realise!

RRP: £18.99

The satisfaction of headshotting a running zombie is unreal

#6 Arizona Sunshine

Pretty close to getting the 5th spot, Arizona Sunshine is the best zombie shooter around and a humorous story keeps it on the right side of scary (not too horror and with few jumpscares). Despite not originally making the Top 10, Arizona Sunshine rose the ranks thanks to its awesome multiplayer mode, allowing up to 4 players to play together through their headsets, a completely game-changing experience. Especially in the darker areas where I confused a zombie for her and screamed like a child as it killed me.

How can such a cute game be so deep

#7 Moss

Moss is perhaps the cutest game on VR. Controlling a mouse but also having a 3rd person view in what can only be explained as an interactive open book opens up a world of game mechanics that are explored where you can simultaneously affect the environment of the game world while controller the protagonist. Compelling story means this is probably the best platformer on Quest.

Be prepared to sweat....a lot

#8 FitXR

Starting life as BoxVR, a boxing game similar to BeatSaber this game was great for those looking for the best VR workout game but not up to BeatSaber's standard for production value. FitXR's latest update is huge, enabling multiplayer fitness, much better graphics and more fun and challenging game mechanics. FitXR is a fun workout in VR that's more serious/intense than BeatSaber but also slightly less fun.

Think you won't get vertigo in VR, think again

#9 The Climb

One of the original games that will make you say "wow" out loud, the climb is a climbing game set in some stunning environments that makes for a surreal experience that, as it gets harder, it becomes very tactical.

RRP: £22.99

Store Rating: 4.5

Visually stunning and something that can only be experienced in VR with headphones

#10 Tetris Effect

A weird one to put in the Top 10, but reviews don't lie on this one. Paying so much for a Tetris game seems weird, but honestly, the visual and music synergy as you complete levels and travel worlds is unbelievable and I wouldn't be surprised if it brings people to tears. Incredibly well executed for a Tetris game, I still can't believe it is able to evoke so much emotion.

[Update 2021] Great Games not in the original article

If Onward is CoD for VR then Population:One is Fortnite for VR

Population:One

The first proper Battle Royale game on Oculus, if Onward is CoD for VR then Population:One is the consoles Fortnite. Personally, I enjoy it a lot more than Onward and it has some really fun mechanics as you can fly, build, climb. I enjoyed holding onto a wall, peaking over and shooting a lot, resuscitating my team mates and fighting to be the last team standing too much! But beware, it can induce some mild motion sickness if you don't have the right settings.

There's a lot more to this one than experiencing multiple realities

Virtual Virtual Reality

With over 50 virtual virtual realties to explore in fun and novel ways this game seems like a simulator where humans replace robots for menial tasks. However, there is a lot more to this game than the trailer reveals, a mystery & struggle to unlock your freedom, or so you think! At a bargain price, this ones a steal!

Call of Duty in VR

Onward

Simply put this is "Call of Duty IRL" or in VR to be more accurate. It feels very real. Having to actually aim down sight, reload manually, physically get out your mini map and communicate realistically (vocally if near, on shoulder radio if further apart) is by far the most immersive experience for a gun/shooting game. This one is so realistic it's a bit scary!

RRP: £18.99

The most fun escape rooms, you will die a lot though!

I Expect You To Die

As the name suggests, you will likely die a LOT in this game while solving these escape room puzzles. With good humour, this is a non-creepy escape room that will have you frustrated at dying doing what you think is the obvious solution to later realise the puzzle is deeper than it looks! Despite not having to move around (stationary game), this is my favourite escape room-esque game and the easter eggs are hilarious!

RRP: £18.99

Store Rating: 4.8

Creepy but satisfying puzzles!

The Room VR

This game is definitely the creepiest and at times scary escape room-esque game I've played (don't worry no jump scares!). With 4 lengthy levels and incredibly difficult (yet logical) puzzle rooms to solve this one is a challenge not to look up solutions online! I really enjoyed this experience despite struggling to play on my own at night due to the sheer creepy nature of the music and environment. It's an excellently executed game, especially for fans of the series on mobile.

Other Games ranked from Good to Meh to Rubbish

  • Pistol Whip

Deserves the Top 10 for most people, but for me, it loses out as it's a tad too intense and doesn't have the depth of gameplay. Saying that, it's a good game!

Rating: 4.8 & RRP: £19.99

  • Echo VR (Free)

Very fun free multiplayer game where you fly around in 3D. Imagine Rocket League in zero gravity but you are the car. What's not to love (other than me personally being terrible at it!)

Rating: 4.4

  • Walkabout Mini Golf

A very well produced mini/crazy golf game with multiplayer, what's not to love. This is more fun than real crazy gold just because of the sheer amount of crazy courses, night mode, collectables and more.

Rating: 4.8 & RRP: £10.99

  • Thumper

Despite being created in 2016 this rhythm game has stood the test of time. Simple controls make a devilishly difficult game as you progress. The visualisations and sound sync in this game are stunning. If you liked Tetris Effect but want something more intense, this is your game, or if you simply like hardcore rhythm games.

  • Rating: 4.4 & RRP: £14.99
  • Space Pirate Trainer

Another port from the original VR consoles, Space Pirate Trainer is the best dedicated shooting game in VR. Choose from lots of guns and shooting mechanics to take on waves of drones.

Rating: 4.7 & RRP: £10.99

  • Pixel Ripped 1995

Pixel Ripped is a very fun and unique gaming concept. You play a small boy in real life who is trying to play on his retro gaming console which you then play via him. It gets trippy when the gaming worlds mix and starts coming into the "real" world. Amazing concept, doesn't quite make the Top 10 for me as I don't find the pixel game as fun as modern games!

Rating: 4.7 & RRP: £14.99

  • Racket Fury: Table Tennis VR

A table tennis game that's more fun than it sounds. There's an arcade mode but I'm a big fan of the "reality" mode that's hyper realistic for game mechanics so you can use to actually improve in real life too!

Rating: 4.2 & RRP: £14.99

  • Eleven Table Tennis

Another Table Tennis game that has a more independently production feel to it, but is far more simple to play, enjoy and customise for multiplayer. Despite it having higher ratings, I prefer Racket Fury, but each to their own!

Rating: 4.5 & RRP: £14.99

  • PokerVR (Free)

The better of the 2 main Poker games, a more mature audience/players and relaxed environment.

Rating: 3

  • Accounting+

The less fun Squanch Games game now Trover is out but very much worth playing for all Rick & Morty fans. I'd say this one is certainly more insane/non-sensical and ridiculous!

Rating: 4.4 & RRP: £8.99

  • Angry Birds VR

What it says in the name being honest with some added mechanics for VR.

Rating: 4.5 & RRP: £10.99

  • Wander

Literally a Google Maps Streetview app with additional collections for famous places and random option. A bit more potentially if they baked in a GeoGuesser game into it, but overly expensive for what it is.

Rating: 3.8 & RRP: £7.99

  • Racket: Nx

A game hitting a ball around in a 3D environment against a wall to solve challenges and score high.

Rating: 4.7 & RRP: £14.99

  • PokerStarsVR (Free)

More features than PokerVR but also full of annoying young kids and just a bit too intense as people can play with fake guns and a host of items at poker tables that makes it slightly annoying to actually play poker.

Rating: 3.8

  • Please, Don't Touch Anything

I don't rate this game in VR, but is kinda fun as a mini-game, but too expensive for what it is.

Rating: 3.7 & RRP: £7.99

Free Apps (not games)

  • Bigscreen (Free)

Free app to allow you to watch movies while in a virtual cinema. They have screenings of old movies (paid) but also allow you to "host" events of up to 6 people for free. Find the right events though and it's a lot of fun, e.g. streaming the football with some great people.

Rating: 4.1

  • AltSpace VR (Free)

Event space app from Microsoft that's cross platform, AltSpace is great for some pretty fascinating events, e.g. meet the producers of games and special interest groups.

Rating: 3.2

  • Rec Room (Free)

Same as VR Chat but skews younger. However, some of the games do look incredible and it seems pretty close to Minecraft!

Rating: 4.5

  • VR Chat (Free)

Big community based game/social network with lots of interactive mini-games with stranges. Apparently a lot of fun but not for me.

Rating: 3.7

  • YouTube VR (Free) - Rating 3.9
  • Prime Video VR (Free) - Rating 3.3
  • Netflix VR (Free) - Rating 3.2

Special Shoutout: SideQuest & Oculus Link

The ability to install and use SideQuest is huge, it'll allow for customisation of existing games like BeatSaber but also to test games not released on Quest yet or in testing. It'll also allow for almost limitless possibilities if you're willing to put in the time to understand and explore.

The Oculus Link is another very significant feature that the more nerdy VR players love. In short, it allows you to play SteamVR games where the processing is done on your PC. The biggest one of these….Half-Life: Alyx.

But are there any RPGs or like, not party games on it?

Absolutely agree, so so impressed by the Quest hardware and the upgrade looks even better! I can already see the entire social side of the platform requiring Facebook integration though which is a huge downside for me In terms of recommendations, Virtual Desktop changed the game for me. Letting you play Steam/Rift games from a gaming PC (or in my case a beefy cloud Virtual Machine), and has really opened my eyes up to the potential of VR/AR office work https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/2017050365004772/
