This ex-Nike design exec used an athlete’s mindset to find success

While growing up in Chicago, Jason C. Mayden heard stories of Michael Jordan shooting 1,000 free throws a day. Mayden, a former design executive at Nike, decided to apply that same cadence and discipline to his craft, creating an average of 1,000 sketches per day.
“Discipline is what makes the difference between someone who succeeds and someone who doesn't,” said Mayden.
Before joining Nike as a design intern, Mayden was rejected by the apparel brand three times. After graduating from Detroit's College for Creative Design, Mayden climbed the ranks at Nike to design executive, working on everything from footwear to wearables, and with athletes such as Jordan and Russell Westbrook.
Now Mayden runs a Silicon Valley startup he founded called Super Heroic, which makes children's footwear and apparel. Here he shares his journey and approach to design:
