The No Jargon Email #02 - Are you back in the office?
I am avid twitter user (more a lurker....but hey most of us are on social) here is my fav tweet from this week:
Look after yourself?guys, don't look at your stats too much......??
Curated reading
Instagram has always been a bit of a pain in the ass?if you use a 3rd party tools like Later or planoly to update social posts (plus it does not work with live streaming tools like restream or streamyard). You’ve never been able to properly upload carousels and multi images posts (different tools provided a workaround but TBH they were all a bit of a pain in a** too). But our good friends at Meta have taken off their VR headsets and?updated the API?(that’s the thing that makes stuff happen for 3rd party tools) and now you can.....which is pretty awesome. Keep an eye out for more updates from the tools themselves for when they roll this out.
"Are you back in the office"?must have taken over from "How's work" as the ultimate ice breaker (aka awkward chat starter). Not a BBQ nor kids sporting event goes by without it being heard. As common as it is, it is a valid question with answers that are not straightforward.?Should office workers be paid more?is the question posed in this 6 min read from the BBC. Many of you reading this will have staff and be juggling with that dreaded return to work question. There are some interesting trends emerging particularly around pay and incentives for in-office versus fully remote staff - rends that will potentially create challenges for smaller businesses that have never emerged before!
Google does not like cookies, no wait they love em, hang on....they like topics, not cookies....What!!!?Maybe you have heard of cookies maybe not (and i don't mean the choc chip variety). But most of you know that the ads on Facebook, Instagram, Google and so on rely on information about what we do online to target people with advertising. It's only a $480 Billion dollar industry. Privacy is the pesky little thorn in the side of the industry that won’t go away - Apple kicked it off with its changes to privacy included in the?update to IOS 14. Since then Google has been dragging its feet finally making an announcement in Jan 2020 about its take on privacy through the chrome browser (which is a big deal as it represents 65% of all browsers used globally). Woo Hoo. Well maybe not, they sneaked another?update out last month going back on this update?- they will do something but not yet.
This is a topic that we keep a close eye on here on Relearn. It will be the biggest change to digital marketing ever - and smaller businesses that get hit the hardest as they represent such a large % of the market - we are currently working on a guide and mini-course to help business owners navigate the changes that are happening.
Conversion rates galore
Comparisons and benchmarking in digital marketing can be a dangerous game. The sheer scale and variety of digital business make it very tricky, so we are not prone to sharing tools or data like this. But this?eCommerce conversion rate calculator?from Shopify is so good.
As one of the biggest eCommerce platforms going the data used to power, this tool is super robust, meaning it scores very low of the "BS Meter" (aka its trustworthy). The tool covers 12 different geographies (Australia obvs) so you can look at the data by vertical and location.
It also has tailored suggestions for optimisation based on your industry. Very cool and worth a play if eCommerce is your thing.

SMS Gold nuggets
Keeping on the conversion theme -?91% of consumers opt-in to text messages from brands. And nearly 40% check their texts within minutes.
This makes sense, we have a phone next to all day (& night). So incorporating SMS into your digital marketing is logical (it often feels like its just eCommerce brands but that’s just not true).
But what do you put in the texts messages???
Check out this?little vault of text-based gold nuggets?to help you with text writer’s block (or maybe inspire you to get your SMS up and running)
Get stuff done: Be a better writer
I am always trying to be a better writer. As a small business owner this is a skill i need to work on all the time - be it content for my courses, marketing, emails the list goes on (i say this as it's one of my weakest skills and one i have to really work at).
I came across this other day and had to share it - Via?@wes_kao?on Twitter
My weekly emails have at least one huge mis-spelling in them (normally 2-3) so i am sure that some of the above tips have been trampled on in this edition too. We can but learn and improve
