Port of Kawasaki Designated as Import Hub for Hydrogen and Ammonia
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has approved a development plan to import #hydrogen and #ammonia at the Port of Kawasaki (Kawasaki City). The Kawasaki port authority had been promoting the conversion of land that was left unused following the suspension of blast furnaces at JFE Steel’s East Japan Works in September 2023.
Approximately 70 hectares on the east side of the Ogishima area of Kawasaki port will be used to form a base capable of receiving, storing, and supplying the low #carbon fuels, as part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality. The port authority had designated the chosen land as a “leading area” and plans to construct a carbon-neutral base centering on hydrogen there by FY2028.?
MLIT approved the revision of the land use plan necessary for the construction of quay walls, and other facilities capable of receiving hydrogen and other materials. The plan is to proceed while making effective use of existing wharves.
The government aims for hydrogen and ammonia to account for 1% of the energy mix by 2030.
