Japanese Woodblock Prints: Works by the Enigmatic Tōshūsai Sharaku and More

If you’ve been to the Chicago Art Institute recently, you may have seen the exhibit “Kabuki-Actor Portraits by Tōshūsai Sharaku” currently on display through October. Coincidentally, we have several of his works available in our September 15th sale. These (after) Tōshūsai Sharaku prints are indicative of his early stage work, depicting notable Kabuki actors in recognizable roles atop a dark mica ground. I think his portrayals are especially interesting because they don’t idealize the figures, and instead are expressive and dynamic. Also enticing is the fact that Sharaku only worked for 10 months and produced an astounding 150 woodblocks in that time. There is mystery and speculation about Sharaku’s true identity dating back to his heyday that still ignites interest in his work today.

In addition to Sharaku, our September sale offers an array of vibrant woodblock prints proudly portraying indigenous architecture, landscapes and figural scenes by the renowned Kawase Hasui , Toshusai Kuniyoshi , and many more. View the entire September 15th auction catalog and register to bid.
