2023: The Year of Ransomware
There is no question about it, ransomware was rampant in 2023 with record numbers of attacks being reported each month.
We recorded 632 publicly disclosed ransomware attacks last year, a 68% increase from 2022's figures. LockBit and BlackCat topped the variant list each claiming 13% of attacks.
Healthcare, education and government continued to be the most targeted industries throughout the year, but we noted increases in attacks in all industries. Most notably is a 140% increase on attacks on the finance industry in the past 12 months.
For 2023, we started to track undisclosed attacks in order to give us a more complete picture of the ransomware landscape. These figures did not disappoint, revealing a worrying 4066 attacks throughout the year.

Some More Happy BlackFog Customers
We always love to hear from our customers about how BlackFog is helping their organizations thrive knowing their data is being protected by our platform.
We recently sat down with two of our newer customers, Telikom PNG and Bonanza Casino to chat with them about their cybersecurity needs and how BlackFog helped to solve their challenges.
Telikom PNG - Telecommunications Company
Telikom faces the dual challenge of protecting a vast volume of customer data and countering the rising threat of cyberattacks.
Head of ICT Navindar Singh told us: "The partnership with BlackFog reflects our commitment to staying ahead of cyberthreats, providing unparalleled protection for our customers, and setting new benchmarks in cybersecurity excellence."
Bonanza Casino - Based in Nevada
With tunnel-visioned end users, the gambling industry becoming a firm favorite of cybercriminals, and new regulations coming into play, Bonanza needed to get ahead and ensure compliance going forward while finding a solution that allowed easy management of endpoints.

BlackFog's Ransomware and Cybersecurity Blogs
We have added a number of new blogs to our website, discussing cybersecurity topics, trends and threats facing organizations. Check out some of our newest blogs:
2023 has been a big year for ransomware, but there have been some encouraging achievements in the fight against ransomware.
Law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity organizations have successfully disrupted several operations, seized infrastructure and safeguarded victims from further attacks.
Although some ransomware groups have been disbanded, ransomware is still a big problem for organizations. New groups emerge each month, tactics evolve, and the attacks become even more sophisticated.
After a year where ransomware continually broke records and attacks became more sophisticated than ever, it is important to reflect and identify trends that emerged from 2023.
The ever-evolving ransomware landscape has given us a few things to think about, from double extortion becoming more widely used, to a worrying surge in supply chain attacks. And with new groups continuing to emerge each month, it doesn't seem like ransomware will be slowing down in the near future.
BlackFog's Newsroom
We are often asked to share our thoughts on stories that are making news in the cybersecurity world. Here are some highlights from the past month:
New reports suggest that between 2016 and 2021, ransomware attacks led to the deaths of between 42 and 67 medicare patients in the US.
Could a ban on ransom payments deter cybercriminals from targeting healthcare industries? BlackFog's CEO, Darren Williams, shares his thoughts on paying ransoms demanded by cybercriminals and how a ban might help.
With business booming for cybercriminals, especially ransomware groups, how can organizations stay ahead of the latest threat techniques?
BlackFog's CEO Darren Williams shares his insights into the ransomware landscape and trends, such as double exfiltration, that have been causing chaos for organizations.
