Q1 Spotlight: James DeMeo

Q1 Spotlight: James DeMeo

January is the month of resolutions. Aside from losing weight and cursing less, being prepared for the year ahead should be on your list.  That is why I decided to highlight my friend James DeMeo. James is a security expert and the author of the bestselling book "What's Your Plan?" For those of us with experience in event management, this book is a great reminder to be vigilant.  For those who have not experienced active shooter drills and facility evacuation plans, this book serves as a great guide to emergency preparedness.

Truth be told, I am the person who runs out of gas because I didn't "find time" to fill up, and my iPhone is commonly at 30% battery life.  After reading "What's Your Plan" I made a few simple changes.  We can't prepare for, or prevent, everything...but as James says, we should " be prepared, always increase (y)our knowledge, and maintain vigilant."

Check out James DeMeo's website to LEARN MORE.

A few changes that I made...that YOU can make as well.

1) I reestablished our family's code word. This is a word special to my family that is required for anyone to transport my children, to enter our home, or to speak to my children on our behalf.

2) My husband and I have open and honest conversations with our children, ages 5 and 8. We believe it is important they understand bad guys exist, and they understand the ways in which bad guys carry out bad acts - be it public shootings or preying on children in public settings.

3) I now carry a physical picture of both of my children in my wallet.  In the event that one of my children goes missing these photos provide an alternative to the pictures stored on my phone.  Additionally, I can give the physical photo to event security or police.

4) I am directionally challenged on the calmest of days. So, if I am attending an event in a large venue (stadium, concert venue, etc.) I snap a photo of my parking spot and venue entrance. If applicable, I drop a pin on Google maps.

5) I always know where the nearest exits are located.

6) As someone who travels a lot for work, I make sure my husband always knows where I am, and he can track me through GPS location services on my phone.

Safety and security conversations occur after a tragedy strikes, and then the narrative usually stops. I agree with James; there is no harm in taking a few simple steps to prepare you and your family for emergency situations. This book is a great first step in your planning.
