Welcome to 2023: three trends we’ve observed lately when it comes to hiring

Welcome to the January edition of the Recruiting from Scratch Report. It’s been an exciting start to the year at RFS, with our team of recruiters and account managers meeting so many great new candidates (and companies hiring).

This month we wanted to share some of the trends we’ve noticed in our conversations, as the hiring market continues to move. We’re starting to see new, or increased shifts in areas like:

Hybrid, or in-office requirements, becoming more common.?We’ve written about this before, but we’re seeing more companies request candidates be in the office at least some days. Two to three days a week is common, but others request more (like four), or on an as-needed basis. We’re seeing this the most in popular cities like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Tech workers who have been laid off, or who are looking for a change - may find their next opportunity at a number of great smaller companies.?The types of companies hiring right now may not be the same companies who hired hundreds of new employees a year or two ago. Fortunately, there are still many well-funded startups, or small to mid-size companies eager to hire. Industries like healthcare, 3D printing, banking, and AI (among others) are continuing to grow in the wake of 2023 trends, like increased automation.

Contract and temporary work is on the rise, and may be another way to grow your workforce.?We’re seeing more and more employers opt for shorter term gigs as a way to get work done at their companies. This is also a great option for people with goals they need to accomplish quickly, or who want to explore projects that may not receive a long-term investment - depending on the results. Contract work also helps employees get a sense of your company and the culture, before either makes a committment.

PS?- have you been affected by a layoff? Check out the?roles we’re recruiting for ?and submit an application today.

Recent placements include a variety of senior roles

We’ve placed a number of senior roles lately, and are continuing to look for Lead, Principal, Management or other senior candidates. Some of our recent placements include:

Thinking about hiring a Machine Learning Engineer this year? We’ve got some tips.

A Machine Learning Engineer trains a model to either predict or classify data that a typical machine wouldn’t be able to process - and they’re becoming increasing important for companies who are significant adopters of AI.

Curious what a Machine Learning Engineer does, or what skills to look for in potential candidates? We’ve shared some tips and ideas all about Machine Learning Engineering, on?our website .

Top skills to add on your resume (or brush up on) for 2023

If you’re an engineer or seeking a new tech job in 2023, we recommend including some of the below skills on your resume. If you’re unfamiliar with some - take some time to brush up on your skills, take an online course, or do some additional research.

  1. Cloud Computing: Platforms such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud are becoming increasingly important as more companies move their operations to the cloud. Having one or more of these listed on your resume for technical roles can increase your chance for success.
  2. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: As AI and machine learning continue to be integrated into more industries, we’re seeing a demand for engineers with expertise in these areas.
  3. Data Science and Big Data: The ability to collect, process, and analyze large amounts of data is becoming increasingly important. Candidates who can thoroughly talk about why they use big data, and how it’s important in their work, can stand out from others.
  4. Cybersecurity: With the increasing number of cyber attacks, phishing scams and constantly-improving hacking technology, cybersecurity will continue to be a crucial area for engineers to focus on.
  5. Internet of Things (IoT): IoT is becoming more prevalent, and engineers with expertise in IoT technologies, such as sensors, connectivity, and embedded systems are still in high demand.
