January Panorama

January Panorama

Welcome to the January edition of Energy Panorama. Happy belated New Year!

Elections have consequences. Which is also the title and main prompt for our annual outlook document; a theme that has been emphasized dramatically this month. Indeed, if 2024 was the year of elections across the globe, then 2025 is the year?that we seek to understand the consequences and changes in policies derived from citizens voting and ushering in new governments.

Featured Report

Our featured report this month is our 2025 Outlook centered on the consequences of last year’s elections while further contemplating:?

·???????? The role of China

·???????? COP 30 in Brazil

·???????? The Trump administration

·???????? Trade dynamics, particularly USMCA and U-Mercosur?

·???????? The resilience of hydrocarbons?

·???????? Progress toward a global carbon market?

·???????? The role of State-Owned Enterprises?

Each of our Non-Resident Fellows has penned a contribution?that sets forth the outlook from their respective home countries, or in some cases, a more specific topical essay.?Additionally, Riyad?Insanally, former Guyanese ambassador to the United States?authored an essay.?

We are also pleased?to include contributions from graduate students as part of?our?Future Energy Leaders Initiative (FELI): Emily Cary from the University of San Diego and Katrina Haidari from the University of California San Diego. In these turbulent times where funding from many sources is uncertain, we’d be very grateful if you would consider a donation to support this initiative.

Webinar Recording

On January 10, we kicked off our 2025 programming with a webinar: Panama Energy Sector Outlook: Economic Development, Energy Security and Affordability, featuring Secretary of Energy Juan Manuel Urriola and Rolando Gonzalez Bunster, Chairman & CEO of InterEnergy, a member of our Board of Directors and Energy Steering Committee.

Our Non-Resident Fellow, Leonardo Beltran, was part of an important research team that published a report this month focused on the decarbonization of the road transport sector in Mexico: Scenarios of sustainable energy transition towards the decarbonisation of the road transport sector: A case study for Mexico.

We are also very pleased to share the launch of our completely revamped and reimagined Madrid Energy Conference web site. Please mark your calendars to join us on May 6-8 for our sixth edition of the conference “Where Europe and the Americas meet for Energy Dialogue!”

And it is never too early to remind you about the La Jolla Energy Conference! Our XXXIV annual conference will be held on October 21-23. We hope you can join us here in our lovely Pacific home!

New Non-Resident Fellow

We are also pleased to announce that this January, Carlos Garibaldi, Executive Secretary of ARPEL, has joined our roster of Non-Resident Fellows. Carlos’ appointment is an integral part of the MOU and collaboration between the IOA and ARPEL signed during the XXXIII La Jolla Energy Conference last October. We look forward to counting on his insights for our work and programs, including the Madrid and La Jolla Energy Conferences
