The transition to and cost-effective use of fibre

FTTH Council Europe launched its new Copper Switch-Off Tracker. It provided a comprehensive breakdown of the progress that EU member states have made in phasing out their legacy copper networks. Its release sparked widespread interest across the continent, resulting in excellent write-ups from the likes of Euractiv, heise online, and TelcoTitans. ? Network builders can cut the amount of expensive optical fibre they throw away thanks to a new initiative from ACOME. Every day, broadband companies waste on average 10% of the fibre they deploy due to a lack of knowledge of how much they have available. The news was covered by ISPreview.

The UK fibre market has become overcrowded in certain areas with different network builders and a surplus amount of fibre. Altnets need to evaluate their options regarding infrastructure sharing and utilise available cabinet, duct and pole space according to AssetHUB CEO Rob Leenderts in The Fast Mode.

The drive for greater interoperability and sustainability

By embracing the collaboration that open source principles promise, alongside the interoperability of open standards, broadband service providers have a clear migration path to upgrade and transform their networks to cater to all users in the connected home. That was the message expressed by Broadband Forum Technical Chair Lincoln Lavoie in an article for Embedded Computing Design.

In an article for New Electronics, Wi-SUN President and CEO Phil Beecher discussed how smart lighting can form a comprehensive network that – with the right technology and interoperability – can provide a foundation for other large-scale IoT initiatives to improve city sustainability and the quality of life for residents. ?

Vanesa Alias, VP Product Management at HUBER+SUHNER, spoke to CIE Magazine about how the company is integrating greener, sustainable practices to align with climate goals, from eco-friendly data centres to innovative packaging solutions that reduce plastic waste by 50%.
