Blacks In Performance Marketing
To encourage, inspire and inform Blacks to join the Industry in Performance Marketing.
It’s a New Year! How can we all be better? Let’s choose the ways, angles, and subject matters that help us to be better—making a difference in our immediate lives and those around us.
During the holidays, while reading “Plantation Theory” by John Graham, I’m reminded of the challenges that Black people face in the workplace—from code-switching to calling out “Black” to just realizing that mainstream media removes the “common” stories that affect Black America. So often, our White counterparts are unaware, numb to it, or perhaps have no interest. Even though the spotlight may no longer have Equity and Inclusion center stage, let’s not allow the 450+ years of grossly unfair treatment in our recent history to believe that it gets wiped out and cleaned up in 2+ years. We all wish… well, maybe not everyone. Currently, with privilege, especially when it’s all that they’ve lived with, it is hard to even recognize that you have it. It’s like taking a breath until you can’t exhale.
Let's also foster connections to encourage, listen, and offer help without the fear of backlash. In our American history, a federal law known as the Black Codes once forbade gatherings of Black men, even with their "allies," under the threat of fines and jail time for vagrancy. While acknowledging our country's progress, we must also acknowledge that backlash remains a genuine concern for some.
In 2024, let’s think about how others may be breathing, how others may be affected by a situation, and let’s offer to step into the gap. That very step involves sacrifice. It also represents a higher character of a person, caring for another without direct benefit to yourself.
Here’s to a New Year of opportunity to be better people and to become the change, with a smile.
