January in Motion Design.
Still from Between Lines by Sarah Beth Morgan

January in Motion Design.

I'll make the intro short; we've got a lot to get to this month.

Motionographer usually likes to race out the block in January, but with the addition of The Motion Awards being announced, it's been more of a whirlwind than usual. Add to that; I've had to keep up with The Last of Us, smash through Andor in a weekend, AND find enough time to do Jiu-Jitsu; turning 37 on Friday never felt so real.

Many things are changing behind the scenes at Motionographer, and there will be some huge announcements very soon, but in the meantime, here are a few pieces that made some noise this month.

Between Lines

In January, Sarah dropped us a line with her new animated short: Between Lines, which was a few days away from being released.

We get hundreds of submissions a month, and the quality of the work is such that it gets to the point where it's actually quite hard for anything to really stand out. I'm just drowning in brilliance all the time. (Shame, it's always other people's).

Between Lines, though, was made up of a team of 30 women based all over the world. So that caught my attention. But then I got the hook: it's about Sarah's personal experience with high-school bullying and the subsequent years of healing. It speaks to isolation, exclusion, and intrusive thoughts in a poetic cadence with beautiful visuals. It affected many of the team here, and we've had a lot of feedback from others saying the same.

If you click anything on this newsletter, let it be this.

Spoiler: We'll be digging deeper into this very soon.

The Motion Awards winners!

What is The Motion Awards? Well...

Only joking. This isn't the place for that.

The Tiny Chef Show

A stop-motion success story.

Social media sensation, herbivore, great cook. Tiny Chef creates “the world’s tiniest dishes, on the world’s tiniest cooking show,” and by the sounds of it, he’s getting bigger by the day.

With the mission of inspiring children to fall in love with cooking, I wonder if he’d gotten to me younger, would I still need Hello Fresh and Deliveroo to come to the rescue five nights a week?

The show’s co-creator and director of photography, Ozi Akturk, joined us to talk about what it’s like filming in such a challenging environment.?

Ozi has a great energy, and after learning more about the show's story, I couldn't leave it there. She'll be back in a few weeks with co-creator Rachel Larson to talk us through their journey and how they went from Instagram to Nickelodeon in five years!

The Top Ten most viewed Quickies of 2022

Come December; this will no doubt be in our top 3 most-viewed articles of the year. It doesn't matter what I write, it's not going to come close, so I may as well surrender. The lifeblood of Motionographer is the Quickie. And these are the ones you guys watched the most last year. In short, there are some absolute bangers!

Design Lad's tips for creating memorable characters.

We love these types of articles. You can finish reading them before your coffee's even cool enough to drink, and what you take away could cure hours (or even months) of frustration and stagnation.

Personal Blog

I write regular blogs, mainly focused on mental health and writing. I know, I know. A blog about writing. I could let 11,000 people go next week and still not get more Meta than that.

I realise not everyone is into fight sports, but if you have an interest in mental health, hopefully, there are some things you'll find useful in my latest series: Jiu-Jitsu or Mental Health. Check it out on my page or by hitting the link. Any questions about the series (or mental health in general), don't be shy about messaging. Talking is everything!
