Summary of January
January has seen lots of conflicting occurrences. In some areas, we have seen a big flood of jobs onto the market and organisations continue to grow in 2023. In other areas, we have seen redundancy announcements where businesses are making cuts or even closing their doors.
The skills gap in the UK remains and so as some businesses close this presents growing employers with an opportunity to attract new staff who find themselves on the job market through no fault of their own. It also presents employees facing redundancy with new opportunities to join stable and growing businesses where their skills remain in demand.
Our advice to anyone who feels they may be in a vulnerable position at work is to get your CV up to date now and keep it up to date. If you're unsure how to get your CV in top shape, or even where to start - have a look Hayley Daniells 's newest blog, linked below. Having a CV you’re proud of, that’s current and ready to go will mean you are quick off the mark should you need to look for a new role.
Our advice to businesses who continue to grow, or even those who are remaining stable, is to continue to focus on building your employer brand, keep candidates at the heart of the process, and provide quick outcomes and feedback. Don’t be tempted to take your foot off the gas when it comes to building Employer Branding and Candidate Experience as it will most certainly turn around to bite you when recruiting becomes trickier again.
Look Out!
Have you seen the news?
Peter Watkins has given employers the heads up that The National Minimum Wage is increasing by approximately 10% in April 2023. Blue Penguin have written an article on what this change means, and what you need to do before these legislation changes in April to make sure that your business doesn't end up on HM Revenue & Customs "Name and Shame" list.
Here's what our MD,?Laura O'Driscoll,?had to say:
“Not only did Pete do a series of really helpful round ups of support being made available for business owners during the pandemic, but he continues to be a font of knowledge now. I would highly recommend you follow him on LinkedIn to keep up to date with changes and how they will impact your business.”
Company Congratulations!
Congratulations to Space Forge!
We love Space Forge’s recent series of meet the team posts on LinkedIn! Introducing the team on your socials is a great way to show potential candidates the types of interesting people they could be working with, while highlighting the different roles within your team and how diverse you are. Creating content like this isn’t a big job, you just need to make sure you plan-et (see what we did there).?
Additional Congratulations
This month we would also like to acknowledge the 50 companies who have made Glassdoor’s list of Best Place to Work in the UK in 2023. The list includes businesses like Ocado Technology, Office for National Statistics, Cromwell Tools, Accenture and Mott MacDonald. The awards are based purely on reviews from current and former employees received between 19th October 2021 and 17th October 2022, which just goes to show how important it is to set up your Glassdoor profile and encourage staff to review you.?

Kim Draper 's Top Tip!
New year, new….website?
Many people treat January as a fresh start and time to start kickstart a new project.
Let 2023 be the year you give your website a glow up, particularly the careers page. Put some time in your diary to review the existing content and start making notes on what you need to add. If your careers page acts as a landing page to solely list your vacancies, then this is the time to change that.
Your careers page should showcase what it’s like to work for you and highlight some of the key ‘selling points’. I suggest including staff testimonials, highlighting the benefits that you offer, clearly communicating your values and any other areas that you feel you excel as an employer.
Stats Worth Knowing!
Why investing in talent now can keep you ahead of your competition?
This article struck a chord with me as it spells out just how tough it is for many business leaders right now as they try to balance what McKinsey describe as the “talent tightrope”.
It begins by stating?“Amid economic uncertainty and a hyper-competitive talent pool, leaders must carefully balance protecting the business in the near-term and setting it up for success in the long-term.”?
So what are they driving at?
Well, against a backdrop of spiralling costs, one option may be to consider implementing a recruitment freeze (or even redundancies) to rein in expenditure but at what cost in terms of hampering your future growth?
Despite the economic slowdown, there’s still a huge skills shortage that’s causing a real headache for employers. The counter argument is to go against the herd by adopting a talent-first approach to uncover those hard-to-find skills that will drive future value creation across your business.
Food for thought…
