January Auction Personal Preview: Jairus Carpenter, Photographer
There are always so many things to look at here, it’s hard to pick just one. I love the kinetic sculpture by George Beckman as well as the leather rhinoceros foot stool because they are both so uniquely individual and thoughtfully created…the sculpture with its easy motion as it relates to the curves, and the ottoman with the perfectly-suited textured leather.
Then there’s the sculpture by Todji Kurtzman . I was at first drawn to it because it looks like a physical representation of tallness, someone with awkwardly tall legs, which I can relate to, being 6’ 5”. But once the piece had my attention, I couldn’t help but study it a bit more. I get the sense it represents someone going through a hard time because of the difficult looking stance, the awkward shape of it. It’s titled “Gratitude” which is counter to the notion of difficulty, however the juxtaposition of the form and the title perhaps is intended to be a reminder or simply a representation to always find gratitude in tough situations…that’s what gets us through it. I don't know if that's what the artist intended, but it doesn't matter. The true beauty of art is it speaks to everyone in a different way. Click here to see January auction catalog.
