January 24 Threat Intel Report

Leave the world not behind but safer. As the pace of our reliance on digital infrastructure accelerates, so does the disruptive nature of cyberattacks. Stay informed, stay secured is TEHTRIS mantra as we believe that by sharing information, we can all become guardians of our cyber space.

We're excited to introduce our monthly newsletter as your dedicated source of cyber threat analysis and insights derived directly from our globally deployed sensor networks, also known as honeypots. These networks are strategically designed to attract hackers into our systems, allowing our TEHTRIS Cyber Threat Intel Unit to extract valuable information and identify emerging trends. Today, we proudly present our inaugural January report, offering a comprehensive view of the cyber threat landscape in 2023.

?

You will find in this report, the challenges facing organizations worldwide have continued to escalate. Throughout the year, cyberattacks surged at an alarming rate, with our experts noting an 8% increase in global weekly cyberattacks during the second half the year, marking the highest volume in two years.

?

Certain threats emerged as particularly prominent. DDoS attacks and ransomware ranked among the top threats of the year, closely followed by social engineering facilitated by Artificial Intelligence, data-related threats, information manipulation, supply chain vulnerabilities, and malware.

?

While the threat of DDoS attacks has taken on new dimensions, this demonstrates the evolving tactics employed by attackers to disrupt organizational operations and underscores the importance of robust defense strategies.

?

Despite Education, government, and healthcare sectors remaining primary targets for cyberattacks, a closer examination of ransomware attacks from our TEHTRIS report revealed the manufacturing and retail sectors as the most targeted and extorted by ransomware groups.

Understanding the actors behind those attacks enables stronger cyber defense and this year, the most attributed threat actors that our report reveals include: NoName, LockBit3.0, Cl0p, KillNet, ALPHV (BlackCat), PLAY, Anonymous Sudan, Black Basta, Vice Society, BianLian, 8Base.

?

If 2023 was the rise of Artificial Intelligence, it has introduced new complexities to the cybersecurity landscape. Generative AI chatbots, such as OpenAI ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing, have transformed data sharing and data analysis. However, this evolution correlates directly with the increase in data compromises, particularly within sectors such as healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing. Notably, the technology sector experienced the highest number of victims, closely followed by hospitality.

?

As we navigate these evolving threats, collaboration, innovation, and proactive defense strategies are paramount. By staying informed with a strong cybersecurity strategy, we can effectively mitigate the risks posed by cyber threats and work towards a safer cyber space environment and digital future.
