The image shows 2025 in big red letters with a gold outline. Inside the 0 are the words "Happy New Year" in red with gold outline. There are golden lines, like a burst of light, coming from the text "Happy New Year".

As we settle into winter, it's the perfect time to focus on safety tips and resources to help you and your loved ones stay safe and warm.

a wheelchair user in her living room reading on a tablet. On the image is a quote, that reads "I am so grateful and at peace and safe because of the items you provided. I can't thank you enough"

On the left side, there is a picture of Ronnie with his walker. On the right hand side, the text reads "Ronnie's Story: Your Year-End Support in Action: We received a call recently from a very thankful consumer. Ronnie expressed his excitement over a new winter-weather-friendly walker we provided to him. Our Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant Renee Thompson visited Ronnie and saw that his walker did not provide the stability and traction he needed to stay safe when walking outdoors, which he greatly enjoys. She was able to set him up with the right model for a small co-pay. Now Ronnie can stay active throughout the snowy months and get his daily steps in."
Below the image on the right, the text reads "You made it possible! Ronnie is delighted with his new winter-worthy walker! So glad we could help, Ronnie!"

Adaptive Equipment & Winter Safety Tips

Navigating ice and snow can be a challenge, and using a wheelchair or a walker adds a new layer of difficulty. But don’t shut yourself away!?

Judi Siegert, our Occupational Therapy Manager, has a few recommendations when it comes to making winter mobility safer.

She suggests finding out more about these specialty items to see it they may be right for you or someone you know!

Products similar to those below are available from many vendors - these are just examples of what you can find.

Yaktrax: Slip these super-traction grippers on over your own winter boots for added safety.

Non-slip tips for canes:? Equip your usual walking stick or cane with an ice-piercing tip to help secure your gait.

Non-slip stair treads:? Hi-grip surface you can apply to your own stairs to reduce slipping and ice buildup.

Heated stair treads:? For even more protection, using heated treads keeps steps free from ice and snow buildup.

Large outdoor surface covering: Even a larger area can be made safer by adding some texture.? See this option made of coconut fiber.
