January 2024 Month-end Edition

This edition focuses on examining Africa's G20 support, as well as publications on the future of youth and social justice, with a specific focus on Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia.

SAIIA on the General Secretariat for Think20 Brazil’s International Advisory Council

SAIIA is pleased to announce that it has been invited to serve on the General Secretariat for the International Advisory Council of the Think20 Brazil, together with the Observer Research Foundation from India and the Institute for Economics and Social Research from the University of Indonesia.

Alex Benkenstein , head of SAIIA’s Climate and Natural Resources Programme, also serves as a co-lead on the subtheme “Operationalising climate justice through financing and technology transfer” in the Think20 Brazil task force on sustainable climate action and just energy transitions.

On 31 January SAIIA convened a policy roundtable with AUDA NEPAD and the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) on African priorities for the G20 in 2024 and 2025. The meeting included the sous-sherpas of Brazil and South Africa, the deputy executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, among others, and members of the Think20 Africa Standing Group, of which SAIIA and IDOS are the convenors.

How Can the G20 Support Africa’s Tax Agenda?

Domestic Resource Mobilisation (DRM) is a key priority. This policy insight looks at the extent to which the past two G20 presidencies have helped African countries to mobilise funds to finance the SDGs and highlights issues that the next G20 presidencies should prioritise.

Africa’s Resilience and the G20: Exploring the Continent’s G20 Agenda

SAIIA’s conference on Africa’s macroeconomic resilience post-COVID-19 and the continent’s G20 agenda offered great insights into the economic and climate shocks experienced by Africa over the past 20 years. It also explored the significance of Africa’s inclusion in the G20. African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, Albert Muchanga ; South African National Treasury’s International and Regional Economic Policy acting Deputy Director-General, Marlon Geswint; and African Union Special Envoy for Food Systems, Dr Ibrahim Mayaki .

T20 Brazil Call for Abstracts

Closing date: 05 Feb 2024

The T20 Brazil process will put forward policy recommendations to G20 officials involved in the Sherpa and Finance tracks in the form of a final communiqué and task forces recommendations. To inform these documents, they are calling upon think tanks and research centres around the world to build and/or reach out to their networks, share evidence, exchange ideas, and develop joint proposals for policy briefs.
