Happy 2023! The beginning of the year is a good time to set targets and make resolutions to improve your life for the better. There’s no better way to turn over a new leaf than with the 2023 Safaricom calendar, whose theme is Places of Hope.?
The calendar contains images of monuments, heritage sites and other locations across Kenya that inspire hope and are of great significance to communities. Zaheeda Suleman, who has worked on Safaricom calendars from its very first days, unpacks this year’s publication.?
We also get to tell the story of a young entrepreneur Nicholas Ndekei, who is in the unique business of growing flies.?

Unpacking the Safaricom calendar
The Safaricom Calendar has become something people looked forward to because of the themes and the beauty it brings to the homes and offices of the people who receive it. This year’s calendar celebrates the Kenyan people’s spirit of hope and resilience by showing monuments and heritage sites where Kenyans from different walks of life seek their sense of power and responsibility, under the theme Places of Hope.
The unique business of growing flies
Young farmer Nicholas Ndekei makes a living doing what some may deem to be unpleasant work. Breeding the Black Soldier Fly, an insect that is becoming more and more well-known for its ability to reduce food waste and produce fertilizer, has allowed him to fill the protein gap in an economical and sustainable manner.
