Thanks for being a part of the Kathy Pearce Coaching Family – a community of people who want to thrive in their careers and find fulfillment in their lives.?Now more than ever – whether you’re building your career, caring for your family, leading a business, or taking care of a workforce – it’s clear that your work isn’t something separate from your life.?Wellbeing and performance are not two separate pursuits.?
At Kathy Pearce Coaching, you’ll find a collection of useful, relevant, and thought-provoking ideas recognizing that personal growth and professional development go hand-in-hand.?Each month you’ll receive a fresh selection of some of our top thoughts, blog content, and other resources providing support for the challenges so many of us face to help you live with clarity, purpose and passion.?It’s a challenging time in the world and it’s also an opportunity to take a fresh look.
Theme:?New Beginnings
January is a month full of inspiration and motivation.?Many of us choose to focus on personal development, professional development, a better lifestyle, better health, looking better, feeling better, etc.?Yet, many of us are also struggling with how to get past the January ‘blues'.?No matter which group you fall into there are some simple and easy tips for sticking with your New Year’s Resolutions or Goals, beating the January ‘Blahs’, and tapping into your positive mindset to help you overcome the dreary winter challenges.?
First, as I talked about last month, I invite you to create your own New Year’s ritual by taking the time to introspect and reflect.?Elevate the ritual by sharing your process of these thoughts with someone else.?You could also write it down on paper as a small ritual that marks something important.?
Think about both the wins and the misses – we always have both.?When I look at both, I ask myself is there anything I want to do differently in 2023??Anything I’d like to remember to change??
As I consider these, this year I am choosing the theme?“Simplify”.?As I reflected on this, I am choosing to?intentionally simplify?my life so that I live in the light, calling forth my richest and fullest life every single day allowing me to live in freedom.?
So, what does that really look like??
“I want to be better tomorrow than I am today.”?
This particular philosophy is one I can really get behind.?So many of us fall into that trap of striving to be ‘better than” …pretty much everybody else! Think about it…we want to not only keep up with the Jones’, but we also want to be better than they are.??
We want to be better than our peers, our colleagues, our neighbors, our teachers, our mentors, our brothers, our sisters, better than our parents.?Let’s face it, even our employers compensation systems are geared towards rewarding those who are ‘better than everybody else’, so it’s only natural that we feel so competitive and continue to strive to be ‘better than’?– even if it doesn’t feel right.?
What if, rather than competing with everyone else in the world,?we explore how we can be better than ourselves??Afterall, who can we control??Only ourselves.?
What if the?new definition of success is to be better today than I was yesterday??
What would that look like??How might that affect how you judge other people, where you invest your time, how you show up for others, and how to step forward in achieving your goals??
How might that change your actual goals??
I’ll give you an example.?Now that I own my own business, my compensation is totally influenced by me being better today than I was yesterday - a better person and a better coach.?It’s not about me being a better coach than any other coach.??
There is no competitive edge here since there are as many coaching styles as?there are coaches, and each one has amazing talents to bring to clients.?In fact, I partner with other coaches in varying ways and it’s not about me being ‘better than’ them.?Rather, it is about partnering and sharing our best selves.?My business truly is about me – me being better tomorrow than I am today.?
So last year I had a challenging year.?My jaw pain was excruciating and there were times I had to reschedule some of my coaching clients.?I didn’t always feel up to meeting with my online business manager.?Some things had to slide.??
As the year wore on, I wasn’t reaching out to as many people for personal referrals and I began to consider what that might mean for my annual revenue.?Towards the end of the year, I was both happy (I’d received my diagnosis and started on medication which eliminated my jaw pain) and I was nervous since I didn’t think I’d met my business revenue and growth goals.?
So, I considered what am I most proud of??What did I do for myself, and not simply to please someone else??What gave me the most energy and satisfaction??What would I have done differently??
And it came to me.?Even with all of the challenges, amazingly I feel like?I am better today than I was yesterday.?
Not because I’m again coaching to my full capacity - no, it’s because I’ve personally learned and grown through my health issues and challenges.??
It’s because I realized that my clients will be there for me, just as I’m there for them because we have a reciprocal relationship.??
It’s because I’m also not competing against any other coaches - we’re here supporting each other and striving to each be better today than we were yesterday.?
And my nervousness as to how my health issues impacted my business, had a major wakeup call.?The shocking results were that my YoY annual revenue didn’t take the horrific dive that I thought it might.?In fact, it was better than the year before.?How did that happen??
My 2022 results tell the full story -?
My client base continued to grow
I was the guest speaker at a Microsoft LT offsite?
I hosted a Spring Women’s Retreat at Seabrook?
Training
I was also able to prioritize time away from my business to enjoy and celebrate life through:
You see – although I felt that last year was challenging with my health issues, the amazing result is that I feel like today I am better than I was yesterday.??I had a very full and blessed year.?So although I may not have achieved my original revenue goals,?I am successful since today I am better than I was yesterday.?
I hope you give it a try.?What might happen if you focus on being better tomorrow than you are today??What might happen if your entire team focused on being better tomorrow than today??
I look forward to hearing how it goes…?Below you’ll find a few other resources and tips to support you as we move into this new year of 2023!
With the intention of making positive changes in our lives, it’s easy to lose momentum and fall back into old habits.?Try these tips for avoiding this and staying on track.
When setting your Goals or New Year's resolutions, it's important to be specific and realistic. Instead of making a vague resolution like "lose weight," set a specific goal such as "lose 10 pounds in the next three months." This makes it easier to track your progress and stay motivated.
2. Break down your goals into small, manageable tasks
Breaking down your goals into small, manageable tasks makes them less daunting and more achievable. For example, instead of setting a goal to exercise for an hour every day, start with a goal of 10 minutes of exercise per day and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable.
3. Create a schedule or plan
Having a plan in place can help you stay on track and focused on your goals. This might include scheduling time for exercise, meal planning, or setting reminders to check in on your progress.
4. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people
Having a support system in place can make a huge difference when trying to achieve your goals. Surround yourself with people who are positive and supportive, and who will encourage and motivate you to stay on track.
5. Celebrate your progress and accomplishments
It's important to celebrate your progress and accomplishments along the way. This will help you stay motivated and focused, and remind you that you are making progress towards your goals. Ask ourself, “What are my wins this week?”
6. Be kind to yourself
If you slip up, don't beat yourself up. Instead, focus on getting back on track as soon as possible. Remember that progress may not always be linear, and setbacks are a normal part of the process.
7. Keep moving forward
Keep in mind that progress may not always be linear. It's normal to experience setbacks, but the important thing is to keep moving forward. Stay focused on your goals, stay positive, and remember that every small step you take is one step closer to achieving your goals.?
Setting and achieving goals can be challenging, but by following these tips, you can stay on track and make positive changes in your life.?
Remember to be specific and realistic with your goals, break them down into manageable tasks, have a plan in place, surround yourself with positive and supportive people, celebrate your progress, be kind to yourself and keep moving forward. Of course, we help make this a bit easier with Coaching and being an accountability resource.
