Market Sentiment - January 2023
The year as predicted has begun with uncertainty and volatility which is predicted to continue during H1. The uncertainty is leading to challenges with regards to companies setting growth targets and corresponding budgets, which directly impacts their senior recruitment plans. Some companies are being more measured and placing strategic bets with regards to investment in growth areas whereas others are adopting a more tactical approach and a wait and see mindset. All is not lost because the ones that are placing strategic bets are recruiting senior leaders to join and build their capability and presence in new market segments or practices. Opportunity also exists within the companies bringing in subject matter experts to meet shorter term tactical requirements.
Demand continues to exist in pockets across Management Consulting, Industry and Private Equity however there is caution being applied by institutions who have recruited heavily in the previous year. Looking at the landscape, uncertainty will continue to impact the world of work for most of 2023, until we see signs of broader economic recovery, much lower inflation and a more positive market sentiment globally.
Areas where we are seeing continued demand include:
In general, Companies who are recruiting the best talent and retaining it will have to keep focussed on providing a culture and environment which is far more balanced compared to the previous decade. Action and implementation of wellbeing policies and company culture will require investment despite the uncertainty that prevails. They will need to improve their well being and resilience offerings and raise them by another gear. Hybrid working will soon become commonplace in the professional services industry and considered a hygiene factor as opposed to a benefit.?
Companies who do not make a step change in their cultural transformations and wellbeing offerings will continue to be impacted by the quiet quitters and the quiet quitting movement. Companies which have taken heed and made transformational changes will provide more sustainable work environments thus reducing the need for quiet quitting and providing an enabling environment for employees to seek and achieve more purposeful and meaningful?work.?
The last few years have seen a greater emphasis and importance placed on the Chief Customer Officer (CCO) and this year roles such as the Chief People Officer (CPO/CHRO) will become even more instrumental and significant in the boardroom. Instead of responding to directions and requests, these key individuals will be given far more responsibility to take further accountability in promoting the right culture and enabling practices at their employers to ensure productivity, wellbeing and higher engagement.

Tip of the Month
New Year, new you?
If, like many of us, your New Years resolution is to look after yourself better - whatever that looks like for you - you will probably have thought about stress.
So, how do you handle stress?
领英推荐
This is becoming a more common interview question and can throw candidates when it comes unexpectedly. It can be tempting to deny that you get stressed, but it is a reality and everyone feels it in their own way.
We recommend you talk about 1 or 2 specific tactics for stress management - perhaps one immediate thing you can do, and one more process driven (e.g. breathing / pausing in a stressful moment, and using a prioritisation technique as a proactive way to manage your to-do list in a period where you feel stress building).
You can also choose to share a real life example of a stressful situation, and how you handled it positively and proactively.
